Godmother

I was expecting this to be your usual fairytale ending (which I’m not really a fan of) but was happily surprised by the unexpected twist at the end. Loved the quirky characters in the book with all their flaws. I was a big fan of fairies as a child, loved that it still had the magical elements but with some more ‘grown-up’ life lessons.

What I thought would be a light read turned out to be heartbreaking... quite a different reselling of Cinderella, and very different from a typical fairy tale retelling. That is all I will say so as not to spoil anything. So good.

There is much more to this novel than meets the eye. I read the book expecting another take on a classic fairy tale. I was sure that this was a light read for a bit of fun. This novel goes so much deeper than that. The main character is Lil, and old woman who was the fairy godmother for Cinderella. Now, Lil is in the 21st century and dealing with modern times, as well as the difficulties that come with trying to hide her fairy godmother status. Lil works at a bookstore where she is employed by George. One day, a young eclectic lady named Veronica meanders into the store. Lil soon decides to set up George and Veronica in a Cinderella story of their own. There is so much going on here that is a lot deeper than this, but it is difficult to tell without divulging too much of a great story. A book that is well worth the short time it took to read.

I was going to give this book two stars, but the last five pages took it up to three.

Fascinating re-telling of the Cinderella story from the fairy godmother's perspective. Alternating between modern time and the time of the story, kept the story well-paced.

Very sad and a little too wordy for my taste. Still despite the fact that it described every detail and every routine chore of the main character it still managed to not be too boring.
It's hard to recommend this book. It's not exactly for the fans of retellings because the focus is so much more on the life of the old godmother than the story and also for other reasons that I can;t reveal because of their spoiler properties but it's also too much of a fantasy to be good for fans of fiction. So I guess you should just go with your guts on this one and don't read it in a time when you need cheering up.

A look at the Cinderella story from an alternate POV. I rather liked the ending--in fact, it redeemed the rest of the book, which I'd found a little on the fluffy side--but I wish it had been more of a plot element through the rest of the book.

I took an early reading copy of this book to the park on Saturday, along with an emergency copy of Elle...you know what a gamble it can be starting a new book sometimes. Elle didn't get a look in, as I was drawn into the fairytale land of the Secret Cinderella Story, and equally enchanted by the scenes of modern-day New York. I had this pegged as 'Gregory Maguire for girls' before I picked it up, but however snappy that sounds, it doesn't do justice to this fantastic and touching tale...

3.5 stars? This book was different. It was an interesting point of view for a fairy tale retelling, but I feel like the ending changes everything! So I don't know how I feel lol.
