Early on I thought this would be a 4 star book, but by the end I would have given it a million stars. There is quite a lot of vulgarity which I could have done without, and it is often unnecessarily flowery with the language, but the story more than makes up for these. This is a looooong book, but so worth it. So many twists and turns and yet every surprise feels fully earned. The author leaves little details that seem like nothing but when the surprise happens, you wonder how you didn’t see it. A beautiful, mysterious, crime, coming of age, love story, thriller - genre defying novel about a pirate and a beekeeper.

I have intense and mixed feelings about this.

Did I like it? No.
Was it well executed? Yes.

TLDR: “The Lovely Bones” if it was a very southern feeling coming of age novel- except of his whole ass life- and the story of navigating purpose and relationships with wild CPTSD.

Interesting! I got lost in it a few times trying to keep things straight as Patch was sometimes not a fully reliable historian for himself and we weren't always sure if some of this memory was real or imagined. This was intentional and the author did a great job pulling at the threads and bringing the truth to the forefront - it was a very good book, and kept my attention. It is unlike anything I've read before.

All the Colors of the Dark is an ambitious novel with a compelling premise, but its execution didn’t entirely work for me. The story follows a tangled web of characters, centering on the search for a missing girl and the two people - Saint and Patch - who seek justice in very different ways. Saint, an FBI agent, works within the system, while Patch, a man operating outside the law, takes a more unconventional path. Their shared goal but opposing methods were one of the most compelling aspects of the book.

However, the novel felt overly long and slow in several places, making the pacing a challenge. The writing style also came across as choppy and jilted, which occasionally pulled me out of the story. Some plot points were confusing, and I found myself needing to reread sections to fully grasp what was happening.

Despite these issues, the core story was intriguing, and the themes of justice, redemption, and survival resonated. If you’re a fan of slow-burning literary thrillers with morally complex characters, this might be worth a read - just be prepared for a somewhat uneven journey.

4.5 stars round up. This book is beautiful on multiple levels - the vivid imagery, character development, depth of emotions… The impact of both trauma and love (and not just the romantic kind)…. The only reason I wouldn’t quite say 5 is that it was a bit drawn out so that by the time I reached one of the pivotal scenes it felt a bit unbelievable/anti-climactic - or like maybe it didn’t get the full space it deserved? Still processing this book so may change my opinion on that later. Definitely a great read with incredible writing.
