LOVED IT!!!!!!!

So I had heard this book was a bit scary and the blurb made me think instantly of the movie, The Village. I was beyond excited to read it and try something a little bit different for me. It started out great, I loved the writing and the simpleness of the town, a town that was full of secrets I couldn't wait to learn. I loved the hushed whispering of the Sisters and the romantic encounters between two of the characters and the path... the path that's off limits. I had to know where it was all going.

And then there was a lot of waiting and sitting around and I started to get kind of bored. I don't know if I was desensitized because of the connection I made to the Village and having seeing a funny zombie movie, Shaun of the Dead. But it just wasn't really to scary to me, slightly creepy I guess but that faded quickly. I did like the idea that this village is surrounded my Unconsecrated (zombies) at all times, they are just kind of there. But it just wasn't happening for me.

Originally I liked how simple the story was and the characters were, it was about their survival and love for each other and then after Mary talked about the ocean for the 100th time I realized that was all she was going to talk about, that and her love for Travis.

I think this book just might not have been for me. I did hear there were more books to come though and I do look forward to them, I think the next book might be of more interest to me. All in all, for me, a great beginning that kind of dropped off from there. Maybe this will be your cup of tea, it just wasn't mine.

Ok one of my new absolute favorites! A zombie book that non-zombie fans can appreciate. It was an adventure to beginning to end. It even had a believable (for a zombie world) love triangle. I really want there to be a sequel. Teen and Adult

Oh man! What a wild ride! This book is crazy! I mean seriously crazy! I will admit that I don't really read a lot of zombie/apocalyptic/survival stories, but I don't think I could handle it! The stress! The fear! The constant up-down-one-catastrophe-after-another can get a little tiring.
The main character did get on my nerves with the whole "which brother should I choose? This one! No, wait that one! Oh darn it all its this brother! I love this one! No, wait, I love that one!" Even given the kind of society that she was raised in, I couldn't get over it.
The world was intense, the story was intense, this book had me on pins and needles! I can't wait to read the next book!

I liked the book. I was surprised though that a zombie book could also have a love story side.

I didn't really like the narration style (present tense). That's why I gave it three stars instead of four.

I was pretty excited to pick this book up because I'd heard so many good things. I was expecting a zombie full, action packed sort of book. But instead, I was left pretty disappointed.

It started out interesting enough, with an attack, a beginning to a love story, and hints that there might be many secrets which would explain why everything was the way it was. It seemed like it was setting it off to be a great story. But then it kind of stopped being interesting. There was no real explanation to why there were zombies, no real reason to why Mary was in love with Travis, no real background to her family or her lost friendship with her brother. It felt like there was too much going on, but nothing was really happening. There were chunks and pieces of what felt like some mystery, some romance, some horror, but nothing really concrete.

Although there were some really great and descriptive scenes, full of gore and mayhem, I think the characters lacked personality and any connection with each other. Mary seemed sort bland, being nothing more than selfish, caring really only for what she wanted. I didn't really feel the bond between her and the other characters. I saw no real connection between her and Travis, her best friend or her older brother. The other characters just seemed to be just there.

I really thought the ending was terrible because it seemed quickly done in order to keep the reader wanting more for the sequel, but there were too many loose ends to provide a satisfying ending. It was really abrupt leaving too many unanswered questions, sort of like stopping the book blindly somewhere just to call it an ending.

I think I may be one of the few readers who didn't enjoy this book, but I still think that if you want to read it, go ahead and pick it up. You might really enjoy it like many others have. As for me, I'm still undecided whether I'll pick up the next book, The Dead-Tossed Waves, which I can only hope to be better.

Rife with beautiful imagery and metaphor, but many of the characters, including Mary, stuck me as shortsighted. The plot felt a little forced at times, particularly the romance, and the later deaths, one more than the other, felt random; they didn't have the sense of finality, perhaps due to a lack of foreshadowing. Lastly, though I wouldn't say the pacing was bad, at times in the story, days or months would pass, but the pacing didn't seem to reflect that.
