I had a difficult time with the whole premise of the novel--that a woman could pretend to be someone's daughter so that she could check him out of a group home and take him on a road trip. Once I got past that, I had to finish the book to find out if the bad dude with dementia really had killed her sister years ago.
Paper Ghosts was a whirlwind of emotions. Heartbreaking, grim, oddly funny and vivid in its imagery. Already seeking out more to read by Julia Heaberlin. "Truth or Nacho?"

This fast-paced thriller packs a punch! At first I was skeptical and didn’t get very into the story but once they were off on their roadtrip I had to keep reading to know what they found. Carl becoming a sort of hero in the story was nowhere NEAR what I expected, but it was sort of satisfying to see that both him and Andy saved Grace in the end
A 12 year cold case wraps up neatly with one simple voluntary confession in last 15 pages of this book? She’s dedicated 12 years of her life to solving this and he solves it in minutes? Anti-climactic at best.
CLF isn’t a serial killer. I knew by Houston that he wasn’t and this was a wild goose chase and Grace was wasting her time. (Not to mention gas)
But it kept my attention and I really liked seeing the unexpected friendship develop between Carl and Grace.
The ending was so disappointing, and it made the 10 day road trip they went on just completely pointless in the end. Turns out the killer lived 20 minutes from her house this whole time and confessed with next to zero hesitation. What a letdown.

This one built slowly. I considered giving up a few times. Then once it picked up and I got to the end, I was grateful for those slow parts.
2.5 stars. It just moved a little slow for me. It was good. It started to really move and get interesting at the end. Although I still had a few questions that didn’t really get answered.
