AUDIO: super quick read. i loved that i read the thought process behind a story rather than just the story itself. you can almost imagine an artist of any sorts in this position pulling out their hair or turning a canvas upside down to try and figure out what it is they’re creating. while reading i really felt like the authors inner monologue was my own and kept pace. im too tired to think of anything profound just know while reading this book there were many positive head nods

this book escapes rating, definition- any way  I would like to quantify it is beyond me. I will leave that for a better man

“What am I but a tangle of uncertainty and pride?”

“Who instilled me with this sick imperative to pin down every thought?”

mmmm boys being boys? to be completely honest i didnt love “no longer human” (also 3⭐️ to me and to which this serves as the prequel) but when this randomly showed up on the library app and was under 100 pages i figured sure. dazai did say it himself: “from the start this novel was doomed. all posture and no substance.” agreed! however, taking into account this was written in 1935, the witty musings on mental illness + the POV itself was pretty interesting. but overall just meh, rambly and occasionally entertaining

the fact that this predates post-modernism is pretty wild, what a weird little piece of literature
