LONG REVIEW WARNING. i have lots of thoughts. mild spoilers kind of? not really though.
poor things is spectacular. it's a divided, book within a book within a book situation, set in 19th century europe. Mr. McCandles gets to tell the story of his wife Bella, and then in a twist, Bella tells her own story too. this book felt like such an exploration.
in McCandle's perspective, we look at a woman who has no sense of what is appropriate, who is learning the world for the first time, and we ask: should we really be buying in to all these social constructs? what if we just... didn't? what would be the consequence? what's the consequences for love, and unabashed truth, and empathy, and critical thinking in a world that is determined to make one follow the strict line of adherence, and should we really fear them so much that we inevitably lose that spirit of self that Bella has?
in Bella's perspective, we get a critical reclamation of her own portrayals. she seizes back control of her life from McCandles's narrative, and tells it her own way. Bella shines differently here, for her strength and empathy that is balanced with intellectual understanding and a soul that will not be shut away any longer by men who wish to control her. as a reader, we get to decide who is telling the real story, and who is lying, and their potential motivations to spin the story one way or another. that's a whole mystery in itself. how do we write our own lives?
forward from poor things, i will continue to ask myself: what would bella do in this situation? would she bow to this person's will, take this on the chin just because she was told it was polite? no, of course she wouldn't. she'd stick to her guns, be smart about her responses, and take no shit from anybody.

Loved this as an audiobook (great reading from the two narrators) and I’ve been curious about the movie and am even more so now.

I found the narration difficult to follow. I did enjoy the film very much, and think it will be easier to read the novel at a later time.
