Despite its length, The Count of Monte Cristo is a pretty easy read. It grabs your attention with all the story’s subplots. The main story is about Edmond Dantes taking revenge for being wrongfully incarcerated. Yet, there’s other things going on in the background. All these subplots connect beautifully by the end, leading to a satisfying conclusion.
When Edmond Dantes takes his revenge, you can’t find yourself feeling sorry for the schemers. Throughout the story, you hear of their terrible deeds. The only ones you feel pity for are the innocents who have to pay the price for their husbands and fathers’ crimes.
I think this a book you must read at some point in your life. It made me realize how easy your circumstances can change from one day to another.

It started off quick enough, but it started to get slow. It was beautifully written, I was just impatient and wanting to get to the resolution. There were a lot of names and name changes and it did get confusing at times. I did have to search up a character map to make sure I was thinking of the right character.
I can see why this is considered a classic.

i've spent years (YEARS!) with this book on my to-read list because, frankly, it's intimidating. and it earned that intimidating title with pages on pages of strange side-plots, a lot of long ramblings from almost every character in the damn book, so many names to keep track of, and an almost ridiculously heightened use of drama. but! all that said, there's a reason this is a classic and a reason it's so beloved - and if you can get past the 1200 pages and the way they take pretty much an entire chapter to have one conversation, it's well worth it in my opinion.
dantes' journey from wide-eyed naive kid into a hardened, cynical adult is both heart-wrenching and cathartic; even when he arguably goes "too far" we're rooting for him the entire way, and the bulk of the narrative's strength rests on him as a protagonist. but for a protagonist, we get surprisingly little of his point of view - dumas' great triumph lies in his deft genius for character voice, and he exercises it so well in this book it's almost shocking. being able to weave together so many different narratives and voices into something that not only works but thrills is what makes this one a masterpiece for me.

7/5 stars.

4.75 | So close to being a 5 Star my god. It's so good but for the ending. I did not jive with that. But by god this story is so worth the page count!
First and foremost, I read the book in its abridged edition. As a consequence, my review does not do justice to the original edition. So, this review is focused solely on the abridged version of "The Count of Monte Christo."
"The Count of Monte Cristo" doesn’t need any introductions. The book is a timeless classic. The story is about love, greed, deception, and vengeance. Edmund Dantes was betrayed and sentenced to jail for a crime he did not commit. Learning about the hidden treasure on the Isle of Monte Cristo, he returned as the Count of Monte Cristo to seek revenge.
Alexandre Dumas was one of the most gifted storytellers who ever walked on earth. His ability to craft such a lovely story is undeniable. The plot was introduced in two time periods, each of which was meticulously detailed by the author. The tale of Dantes' journey to the annihilation of his three enemies is beautifully told. The author has succeeded in writing a fine book that is more than just a vengeance story. The descriptions and detailing of human emotions are the most unique aspects of the novel. The author put a lot of effort into those parts. I truly enjoyed reading the entire book and was astounded as I proceeded to read it without being bored. I never read a classic book before, but I'm looking forward to reading more of them now. "The Count of Monte Cristo" completely altered my perception of classic literature.
If you're thinking about reading this lovely tale, make sure you get the unabridged edition. I'm sure I skipped a lot of the story's subplots in the abridged version. So read the original version if at all possible.

Listened to on the CraftLit podcast. And it took me a year and 8 months to complete! A rollicking read with lots of ups and downs and lots of characters to follow.
