7/5 stars.

4.75 | So close to being a 5 Star my god. It's so good but for the ending. I did not jive with that. But by god this story is so worth the page count!

First and foremost, I read the book in its abridged edition. As a consequence, my review does not do justice to the original edition. So, this review is focused solely on the abridged version of "The Count of Monte Christo."

"The Count of Monte Cristo" doesn’t need any introductions. The book is a timeless classic. The story is about love, greed, deception, and vengeance. Edmund Dantes was betrayed and sentenced to jail for a crime he did not commit. Learning about the hidden treasure on the Isle of Monte Cristo, he returned as the Count of Monte Cristo to seek revenge.

Alexandre Dumas was one of the most gifted storytellers who ever walked on earth. His ability to craft such a lovely story is undeniable. The plot was introduced in two time periods, each of which was meticulously detailed by the author. The tale of Dantes' journey to the annihilation of his three enemies is beautifully told. The author has succeeded in writing a fine book that is more than just a vengeance story. The descriptions and detailing of human emotions are the most unique aspects of the novel. The author put a lot of effort into those parts. I truly enjoyed reading the entire book and was astounded as I proceeded to read it without being bored. I never read a classic book before, but I'm looking forward to reading more of them now. "The Count of Monte Cristo" completely altered my perception of classic literature.

If you're thinking about reading this lovely tale, make sure you get the unabridged edition. I'm sure I skipped a lot of the story's subplots in the abridged version. So read the original version if at all possible.

Listened to on the CraftLit podcast. And it took me a year and 8 months to complete! A rollicking read with lots of ups and downs and lots of characters to follow.

"What do you mean you've never read any Dumas? You probably have, or at least read his plotlines absconded by other authors - deception, poison, revenge of the little guy, secret love, messed-up inheritance laws, and a freakish kid who decapitates roses. This was my first exposure to the author, and I recommend it only if you don't have any important work for the next four days. Once you pick it up, it will become an extra appendage."

A tale of betrayal, revenge, and forgiveness, The Count of Monte Cristo remains one of the greatest published narratives after two centuries. Its size alone prevents me from recommending this book to everyone, but retrospectively every character seems necessary to the plot.
