Edmond is a LOSER.
I’ve always wanted to read this but but could never get past how huge it is. I picked it for my book club with Uncle Mike and we read it as a slow and steady, reading just ten pages a day and texting each day with any commentary. This was the perfect way for me to tackle this novel! I love this book. It’s nice to read a classic that is actually good and worth its reputation. Now I can’t wait to go back and rewatch the movie version from like 20ish years ago that I loved in high school to compare and contrast!

I'm hugely disappointed in myself, but I have to call it a day on this one. I will definitely come back to it in the future, but after two or three hundred pages of little more than filler waffle around the midpoint, and only minimal reference to the 'main plot', I simply became agitated by the whole thing.
It's blatantly obvious this was originally a serialised story and it appears to me that Dumas' contract was extended during the midpoint, and he tried all he could to fulfil his extended commission. But that's just me guessing.
It's a shame because I was one hundred per cent invested in the main character of Dante and his journey, but quickly felt my interest wain whenever Dumas ventured away from that. The writing is great. The story is great. The characters are great. Even the politics is great. But only when Dante is on the page.
And so, with my head hung, I walk away in shame.
