Da una saga che promette di essere un misto tra Harry Potter e Queste oscure materie mi aspettavo decisamente di meglio.

A Winter’s Promise deserves a lot of credit for its world building, prose, and characters, though it doesn’t function very well as a standalone story.

The post-rupture world is enigmatic and wonderful to stumble through; the reader is told enough so that they will be interested and not completely lost while most of the lore is never really explained, making the setting all the more mesmerizing.

The prose is very clever, at times whimsical, ethereal, and grim. The bits where Ophelia “reads” objects (especially accidentally), and the segment where she forgets a certain event midsentence were especially amusing to read.

There’s also a solid cast of characters, Thorn and Berenilde in particular. The characters are neither lovable (save Rosaline, the Samwise Gamgee of the story) nor detestable and gradually reveal juicer bits of their intentions throughout the story. It’s a shame that none of them were particularly dynamic, they were all pretty much the same at the end as they were at the start.

A Winter’s Promise feels more like a prologue than a complete story. Sure, there are three books following it, but after 490 pages Ophelia didn’t really change much after she left Anima. The book begins with Ophelia upset about her circumstances, runs you around in a few circles of mystery, magic, and murder, then concludes with Ophelia being upset about the same circumstances, except now she has a black eye.

Though the narrative really holds this book back, that may be forgiven after reading the subsequent adventures of “The Mirror Visitor.” At the very least the quality writing, characters, and setting make the book more than worth a read.

also I thought Thorn was literally me for like 3/4 of the book but he didn't develop the way I expected and I was annoyed so there's that

can’t leave a review until i have finished the series!!

2.5? i def got more engaged as it went on, but not enough so that i want to continue reading the series. i did like ophelia as a protagonist, but i'm still unclear on if other ppl from her world (or ark, as they call them) have that ability? her grandfather (or was it uncle?) who she was close to seemed to help her learn how to use the power, implying that he and/or others had the same ability. but it just took too long to get interesting, and spent too much time with individual characters as opposed to painting a picture of the political climate on thorn's ark. i also felt like the concept of the familial spirits was interesting, but not fleshed out enough. was bernidle really preggo with their god farouks's child? the way the mirage clan was able to transform physical space was a very cool idea, but sometimes made the book hard to follow.

I'm not one to usually read YA but this was great.  I even had to look up a few words.  The world building was wonderful and I really enjoyed the characters.  This is high fantasy.  I will be reading the next book in the series.
