4 estrellas porque tiene final triste. :( Pero ya lo venía viendo, ese final. Me están gustando mucho los cuentos de Oscar Wilde, y las enseñanzas que traen.
Typical Oscar Wilde.
Shapes you into a bundle of warm feelings, of hope, beauty and anticipation, only to slam the door in your face and make you feel guilty for being too naive.
All ends in irony and disappointment, but usually with a good lesson as takeaway, so the darkness is worth it.

This was part of my school syllabus and that is one of the main reasons why I failed to appreciate this more until I reread it.
A tragic fairytale!
Within a span of short few pages, Wilde is able to put forth so many themes of love, sacrifice, materialism and complex emotions. We are too often so wrapped up in glamorous things that we fail to feel the contentment that comes out of most ordinary things in life. Much like his other works, with a subtle touch of humour and some great and memorable prose like :
"What a silly thing Love is"
“Ah, on what little things does happiness depend! I have read all that the wise men have written, and all the secrets of philosophy are mine, yet for want of a red rose is my life made wretched.”
