This was a slow burn for me, but I did become more invested in the story as the book went on. I saw the assault from a mile away but not the whole "she actually died in the car wreck," although in looking back, I do see the clues.

3.5/5

I like Anita Shreve as an author. This was not her finest. It mostly aggravated and annoyed me. I wanted to slap both main characters across the face. http://erraticprojectjunkie.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-last-time-they-met-by-anita-shreve.html

Had a hard time getting into this book. DNF only 50 pages in.

No. Nope. Didn't like that.

One of the best endings I've encountered. Shreve took everything I thought I knew about the story and turned it on its ear in the space of a few paragraphs. Well done.

This is the second of Shreve's books that I have read and I loved this one as much as the first (The Pilot's Wife). Fantastic story with a twist at the end that left me heartbroken. I would highly recommend this book.

Anita Shreve is my favorite guilty pleasure writer, & this is one of her more interesting efforts. I liked the structure of this book - telling the story from the end & going back in time to the beginning. Not super original, but interesting & fun. Linda & Thomas meet originally in school -then again, later in their lives, in Africa - & finally at a literary conference when they are both successful middle-aged poets. They keep falling in love, but can't be together, because this is most certainly a story of doomed love. I always enjoy Shreve's gift for dialogue & description, & the way she layers & layers a story so that you see different shades within an apparently simple situation. That technique sometimes slows the story, but overall I found this book a pretty quick read. I loved the section that takes place in Africa - it appears to be well researched & took me to a place I rarely read much about. I enjoyed the characters, though I could tell from the beginning that things were not going to work out for them - & they both seemed like kind of sad people. Even so, I liked them & kept rooting for them!
I was mentally prepared for the big twist, because I read the book jacket & knew something of that nature was on the way. Still - I have to say I didn't like that part - & I feel it already was a good & interesting story without the twist! So I'm in denial & pretending that part didn't happen!
Recommended for people who like a good love story with a little bit of depth & complexity - & a who don't mind a big old 180 turn at the end!

This took me a long time to get into, but I enjoyed the point of view once I got into it. I'm still thinking about the ending.....

The first time I read this book, it bugged me. The writing style, the going backwards, it just didn't "flow" for me. The 2nd time I read it though, it was much better. I related to the characters more too, the 2nd time around.

I've been a fan of Anita Shreve for quite some time, my favorite of her's being "Sea Glass."
I enjoyed "The Last Time They Met" mostly because of the backwards chronology and the intense relationship between the two main characters, though you have no idea why their relationship is this way or how it came to be, until the end. I love the way Shreve can take characters I would normally dislike, due to their actions, etc, and make me empathize with them, wishing them a happy ending.
And the ending gave quite an unexpected twist that left me confused at first - but I won't spoil it for you! :D
