Another fascinating story in this series!

In this story we get to know Felicia, Gunnie’s younger sister. I hope in the future we will see more of Gunnie and Eli as I missed their presence in this book. It was interesting to get more background on Eli’s family and Felicia. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

I was hoping to enjoy another adventure with Lisbeth, maybe coming to help out at some point in the story. I was disappointed and sadly mistaken as the book focuses on what happens during Felicia’s early time at the grigori school and her budding relationship with Peter.

The central plot was ok but I found it too spread out in the book. Finding out more about her maternal relations was good, with their status in their locality.
I liked the discovery of her powers and how her friendship with Felix develops as her tutor.

I am not interested in reading about ‘teenager drama’ such as she had with her roommate or her romance and then fights with Peter.

The lack of Lisbeth and Eli made for a slightly dull read for me. I will continue with this series if a new book is released, however more books like this one will sadly drive me away. I just hope this is setting up something major for Lisbeth.

I wasn’t sure if I’d like a story that focused solely on Felicia and left Lizbeth behind, but @RealCharlaine once again had me falling in love with her Gunnie Rose series.

The Serpent in Heaven was amazing. And I can only hope we get at least one more story in the series.

Fun and readable but again the world-building felt sloppy - this is how competent the imperial government is? really? and how does magic even work? - and some of Harris's choices bewildered me, particularly the choice that
SpoilerFelicia's father had de-aged her by four years so she didn't hit puberty, and also made her look darker-skinned and darker-haired "to fit in with the others"... so she is now a fair-skinned, brown-haired fifteen-year-old rather than a tan-skinned, black-haired eleven-year-old. There wasn't any narrative reason for these choices, save that Harris wanted her new viewpoint character to be older... and, I guess, whiter? It feels kind of yikes, honestly.
