“It’s him, it whispered at the back of my cluttered mind. Some old instinct I’d long forgotten. See him. See him. And when finally I did, I knew him instantly. When I saw him, I recognised him straight away. Even if his face wasn’t yet familiar to me. He was mine. He was everything.”
I don’t know why I was so hesitant to dive into a monster romance before because WOW! I’ve seriously been missing out.
This was insanely good and unexpectedly sweet. It completely defied my expectations in the best way, and I’m not even a little disappointed. I was hooked from the very beginning, not a single dull moment. The plot kept me entertained throughout, and the world the author built is so, so good. Monster romance is officially on my TBR radar now.
Wyn, the terrifying soul eater who’s actually the sweetest, most caring, and shy monster ever, completely stole my heart. The way he is with Danny—the tenderness, the quiet insecurities, the genuine kindness—it all made me fall for him so fast. How could I not adore him?
“I can protect him,” Wyn snapped. “He’s not a killer. He doesn’t need to become one. My insides are already black and ruined from the lives I’ve taken. I will gladly take on that burden for him.”
I love Danny just as much. He’s so precious. Even in a world full of danger and darkness, he stays compassionate and kind. He’s one of those rare souls that you just know needs to be protected at all costs and thankfully, he has Wyn to do exactly that.
“But of course that desire had woken up now. Of course my weird, stupid brain and body would decide that the person worthy of the unrequited lust of Danny Sullihan was an ancient death monster.”
I absolutely love these two, and honestly, I could read so many more books just about them. I was hooked on their relationship from their very first interaction, that whole “I will only speak to him” moment? Instant obsession. And Wyn being calm and kind only with Danny? I melted. Don’t even get me started on how he refused to escape without Danny by his side—UGH, I LOVE IT.
“How did you know where to find me in there?”
Wyn stirred, brushing his lips over my hair.
“You’re in my blood now, Danny Sullihan. I’ll always be able to find you.”
“I love you.” His voice shook the tiniest amount, making my heart swell too big for my chest.
“More than anything in this universe. But you can’t tell anyone.”
I burst out laughing, happiness filling every inch of me, every cell, until it felt like I would burst. I shoved at his chest.
“Because no one can know Wyn the Soul Eater has a heart?”
He leaned in and nuzzled my face, his cool lips brushing my mouth.
“Exactly,” he murmured, before kissing me.
They’re just perfect together. What really got me was how their intimate moments weren’t just insanely hot, but also filled with so much emotion. I adored how everything began with those shy, hesitant touches and slowly built into something so confident and sure. The way their bond deepened with every scene and the spice was something else! It was different and so out of the box (not the sex itself, but if you’ve read it, then you know what I mean). I had to use so much more of my imagination than usual.
“Because I want your face to be the first thing I see when I wake up.”
“Really.” Wyn’s flat voice told me he didn’t believe me.
“Yes, really.” I pushed up and straddled Wyn, holding his head in my hands so he couldn’t turn away.
“I want to see you looking at me.” I leaned down and began kissing every part of his face that I could. Mouth, chin, jaw, brow, cheeks.
“I want to see your eyes. I love this face. It’s so hot. You’re beautiful—”
“Okay, okay.” I felt the corner of Wyn’s mouth curl up just a little under my lips.
I hate that I had to read it slowly because of lack of time—because my God, I wanted to devour it! I really loved this book, and I’m so excited to get to the others in the series. I don’t know what to expect, but I’m 100% sure they won’t disappoint. Wyn and Danny are a top couple for me and I’ll have to see if any of the others can surpass them!
“You’re all I want, Wyn. You and me.” I swallowed, glad he couldn’t look at me while I said this.
“My whole life has felt like I was just kind of drifting. No purpose. No aim. But now… This feels like where I’m meant to be. This feels right.”
Wyn wrapped his arms around me and squeezed almost too tight.
“It does,” he rasped.
“It is. You’re mine, Danny Sullihan. I’ve been waiting for you for a long time.”
Quotes worth mentioning:
“There you are. That was all I could think. This was the face that had seen me on that blood-soaked field. That had watched me from his cell back at the military base. This was who I’d had all those conversations with. Who I’d walked beside for mile after mile, talking about nothing. Who had kept me safe and warm and fed for weeks and weeks out here in a lawless, monster-ridden wasteland. That mouth had sucked venom out of me to keep me alive. It had kissed me hard and ruthlessly. It had shared things with me. It had given me so much pleasure. More than I’d ever known before.”
1.5 stars This book is a big fat no for me, I’m actually astonished from the high ratings and good reviews I see under this book because it was mediocre
It was underwhelming, I mean the start was good, the pace was fast and the mystery about Wyn character and him and Danny first encounters were so interesting and I was so sure the story would have gone in a totally different direction than what it has been, the vibe was so dark and different at the very start and then it became flat boring and pretty vanilla but not the good type, I mean two robots have more chemistry than Wyn and Danny, the romance had zero development at all, Danny sported a semi out of no where for his first time and he was like “yeah I’d hit that strange no face vigilante” when Danny asked for sex, Wyn agreed as if he had just asked him if he could borrow his bottle of water “you want it Danny? Sure go ahead” WHAT WAS THAAAAT and they pretty much just fucked for the rest of the book, I mean I love smut but god you two horny bitches!!!!

This started off as a really fun read, interesting spin on an apocalypse. Danny and Wyn were adorable, the spice was plentiful, the violence was satisfying. Unfortunately it was just so repetitive (could have cut out a majority of the shower scenes lol) . Word choice was also questionable at times (I cant take "nuts" being used in a sexy way seriously) . Since this was the authors debut I wouldn't be surprised if the writing got better as the series goes on.

3.5 rounded up. a flawed but fun romp that doesn't shy away from the monsterfucking or weird anatomy. it isn't even THAT weird, but judging by some reviews it's still too far for a lot of people lol

3.5 - interested in the world and the continuation of the story, still a little surprised at the complete lack of plot in the middle of this book. the resolution of the conflict felt... lacking? Completely within a realistic realm of possibilities, but not very exciting honestly. I'll probably continue this series, we'll see.

Well. I did not know this was a uh, monster love?, book (Series name being Monstrous, was clearly not a big enough clue for my dumbass) and I'm as virtuous in this genre as sweet Danny was, and well,
I aint ashamed to say I absolutely loved it. Like, laying on bed, giggling and kicking up my heels at how cute these two were 😅😁
(the narrator absolutely knocked it out the park too!)
