July, 2017: listened to it as an audiobook from the library--reader (Flo Gibson) was not good (she's not really very good usually) but the story is truly wonderful. I don't think I'll ever top the experience of reading it while we were in Florence, though!

Charming satire of social mores and expectations in early 20th century England. The writing style is a bit turgid at times but manageable and suits the story.

A hobby shouldn’t feel like a chore! Still, another classic ticked off, thank you Newport Libraries.

Fantastic narrator who really brought the story to life. Lucy's self-deception was totally believable, and I thought the ending was well done.

Slow to start, but really quite good.

So I wanted to really like this book for some reason, but when it ended, I was left thinking that nothing really happened in the story. The best part was the beginning, but that could be because I am partial to Florence. I don't know what happened, I usually enjoy these period pieces about frivolous drama and the sexual heaviness of a kiss on the cheek. Eh.

"Life is a public performance on a violin, in which you must learn the instrument as you go along."
