Love Juliet Marillier, did not finish this series. Don’t have it in me to read about a charming power-hungry sadist right now.

Wolfskin is not as clever or as well written Marillier's other books I've read. It was too slow paced for me and my inner eye's vision was mostly blurred and murky. Once the magic finally appeared, I had clear glimpses of some scenes. I became most interested in the part about the silkies and the making of the harp of bone, but otherwise I was disappointed.

This book was recommended to me and I am so very glad I finally did get around to reading it. Due to timing I had to speed read it and finish it all in a day before it was due to the library but it was certainly worth it. I loved the setting and the characters had both an iconic quality as well as the more personalized touches that made them singular people. In many ways one could say the book focuses on two friends: one good, one bad but that simplifies each them in a manner that is unnecessary. The book could also be about the growth that occurs when we are thrown extreme change and how we have to learn to meet our fate rather than let time pass us by. Enjoyable and certainly recommended.

The first two hundred pages or so were beautiful. I adore how Juliet Marillier writes and her portrayal of boyhood friendship was masterfully done.

Somerled is a great villain - he did awful things but you can’t help but have some sympathy for him in the final pages. His love for Eyvind was perhaps his only redeeming quality. I loved reading about their relationship - and how their initial forced friendship became brotherhood.

I didn’t particularly enjoy the chapters from Nessa’s perspective. Perhaps I had high expectations of her as another of Marillier’s heroines, Sorcha, from Daughter of the Forest has to be my favourite book heroine of all time (so far). Her chapters just fell flat with me - and I found myself wanting to get back to Eyvind’s perspective.

Nor did I like her insta love with Eyvind. I usually like fantasy novels with a hint of romance. However - I just felt like their romance was a bit forced though I did appreciate them both together more near the end.

I’m looking forward to reading the sequel, Foxmask, and other Marillier work. She is fast becoming my favourite author.

While interesting, this book wasn't as amazing as Daughter of the Forest. The main characters were great, but Somerled was a little too one-dimensionally evil for my taste. From his very introduction it was extremely obvious that he was evil, and the only real tension in the story came from Eyvind trying to decide if he should open his eyes or not.

Much better than the cover art leads you to believe.
