Single: A totally gripping psychological thriller full of twists by K.L. Slater

It is without a doubt, K. L. Slater is one of my favourite thriller authors & this book is exceptional.

Darcy, our main protagonist is somewhat delusional. I never knew what to think with her. It’s like she knows what she’s doing but at the same time she doesn’t, if that makes sense?! If you’ve read it, then you’ll understand where I’m coming from but if not, READ IT!

I have to say, I was not expecting the twist that this book delivered at all, so that was a surprise turn in events. But, on the same token it leaves you reeling and wondering just who you trust within these pages.

By the last few chapters I was feeling more emotional for Brenda especially, for a background character, she really plays an important role throughout the book.

George is the perfect bloke, surgeon at hospital, single father etc… so Darcy should be counting her blessings, right?!

This was my first K. L. Slater thriller and I look forward to seeing the other twisty tales this author has on offer. In 'Single', Darcy is mourning the death of her husband Joel, and recovering from a breakdown, when she meets George Mortimer. He is a doctor whose calm use of first aid saved Darcy's son's life. Following this event, Darcy find herself falling heavily for this charming stranger as their lives become speedily entangled.. but, as expected in a psychological thriller, everyone is keeping secrets!

I found this book gripping and enjoyed unpicking the different layers within it to search for the truth. Some of the twists I saw coming but this didn't diminish the enjoyment of how Slater sets up the reveals. Other twists I didn't see coming but this was mainly because the ending got a little bit absurd... By losing the realism, it lost me a little (and one star from my rating).

I look forward to reading more of Slater's thrillers in future.

I struggled with this book - I felt like I couldn't get into it. I found all the adult characters to be unlikable & the some of the twists were predictable. However, the last 20% of the book was gripping & I didn't want to put it down.

Thank you to Bookouture & NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

What would you do if everything you knew was essentially a lie? We all have different ways of dealing and coping but it isn’t out of the realms of possibility to believe that some people would sink into depression. That’s what Darcy’s situation in Single has been like for the past four years. Her husband is dead, a fight with an illness took him quickly. But, whilst navigating the heavy, murky waters of grief, she discovers that her husband had been unfaithful. He hadn’t just had an affair, but he essentially was living a double life. He spent half the week with another woman. Her psyche broke and all that while trying to support her two sons who obviously no longer had their dad.

The story is principally told in the perspectives of Darcy and that of handsome, personable Urology Consultant, George Mortimer. He is also a single dad to Romy. Her mum also having passed away. They have so much in common. Two lives that seem ready to move forward, together, after having being dealt a really rubbish set of cards in life. As they become closer you can see that George has more than one skeleton in his closet. The story develops, and it becomes more twisty.

The secondary characters in Single were extremely unlikeable. I know that was the author’s intention but at times I felt like they should have been genuine and caring and they would have got a lot further in their needs and wants. Take Darcy’s sister-in-law for example, she professed to being her best friend and having her best interests at heart, but her actions are in complete conflict with that. Who on earth tells their friend that considering dating again after four years is too soon? It’s just manipulative and controlling to the highest extremes.

Darcy had so much on her plate. When the five of them went to Yorkshire to stay in a lodge at Christmas it really started gaining traction. Odd occurrences, the feeling of being watched, letters, flowers being delivered, photos obviously being taken. George talks about a past girlfriend and Darcy wonders if it could be someone from her past? George’s explanation has the warning bells thumping a deathening beat. What is he hiding?

I did struggle to fully be taken in with the twists in Single and I really wanted to be. I wanted it to be more menacing, more shocking, a complete gasp moment when all was revealed. One incident happened, and I couldn’t help but think if it happened to me, I probably wouldn’t have given it two thoughts. I really wanted more tension, a feeling of balancing on a knifes edge that I just didn’t experience with this story. I enjoyed the story and wouldn’t hesitate on giving K.L. Slaters other books a try.

"My man is innocent, and someone else is to blame."- This quote from the book perfectly fits the viewpoints of the lead FMC

This book pulled me into it within the very first few sentences. I became hooked into the characters' lives and had to continue listening, no matter what had to get done. Thank goodness for good earbuds!

Right away, we meet Darcy. A widowed mother of two boys, Kane and Harrison. She hasn't had it easy. when he husband, Joel, was dying, she discovered that he had been living a double life. A whole other woman, Daniella, had been sharing her husband! Together with Joel's parents and his sister Steph, Darcy has done the best she can to raise their boys and keep his memory alive.

That is until she meets George. George is not only a widower himself with a beautiful daughter, but he is also a doctor! (excuse me while I gag a bit at the cliche) George and her both have pasts. Her's in the form of the mistress Daniella and him in the form of an ex Opal who has become a stalker. (again, an overused femme Fatale cliche) Now someone is out to hurt their new relationship, but which woman is it? Also, the over involved dead husband's family seem to believe that Darcy is unstable and unfit to parent the boys (internal groan😔)
The relationship does move very fast. think lightning speed. from sharing Christmas to moving in within the space of a few months.

Most of the twists were predictable 😒 but the ending was not what I expected and had me taking a break at work so I could listen uninterrupted.

The characters were easy to understand and well fleshed out even if they weren't all likable. The children were the only ones who truly seemed to have any common sense. 😕 Darcy seemed to always be a victim. George is definitely hiding something. Steph "plays" at being sweet. And the grandparents seem to want whats best but dont have a full picture and are only looking at their lost son and the grandboys he left behind, not how their actions will affect anything.

The overall story and plot lines were engaging and easy to follow. I would absolutely recommend it. Don't expect a 5 star read. This definitely hovers around the 3 star mark.
