One of the most comprehensive histories of any city I have come across. Wish there was something of this level for London or Tokyo (haven’t looked that hard for Tokyo tho tbh). A must-read for any New Yorker or anyone obsessed with New York.

Crazy to think a 1400 page book only has 200 years of history in it. The history is so much more than NYC by the facts and figures, though, so it makes sense once you dive in. There is so very much to read here. So very much to absorb and digest, but it goes down smoothly due to the pace, sections, illustrations and deep dives that the author takes to bring a social history of NYC. Great stuff.

Amazingly thorough history of New York from its creation up until 1900. Amazing how influential the city has been for this country. Also amazing how so many things happening in American society today, both positive and negative, happened to some degree at some point in new York's history.

Excellent book.
