So I powered (*cough*) through Heroine Worship last night and today. Everything I liked about the relationships in [b:Heroine Complex|27209443|Heroine Complex (Heroine Complex, #1)|Sarah Kuhn|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1460482959l/27209443._SY75_.jpg|47250933] was further developed, and Annie's journey of self-discovery (and her eventual willingness to take risks) was awesome. I also thought the pop culture references were very well done; admittedly I am a bit of a sucker for Star Trek references.

drey's thoughts:

If you're looking for a bubblegum-pop read this summer, pick up Heroine Worship! It's the second book in a series (book 3 - Heroine's Journey - is out July 3rd), but can be read as a standalone.

Heroine Worship is the story of a girl who's used to being needed, used to doing things her way, and used to others' praise for saving the world (or San Fran, anyway). Now, Aveda Jupiter - aka Annie Chang - is having an identity crisis. She's not superhero-ing now that San Francisco has been saved from demons (for the time being), and she's not sure what to do with herself. When one's whole life is tied up in their super identity, how do you handle down time? In 2 words: Aveda's not.

When her BFF Evie Tanaka gets engaged and asks Aveda to be maid of honor, Aveda takes to the role like a duck to water. Or is it fish to water? I'm misplacing my animals. In any case, Aveda decides she's going to be the BEST maid of honor, EVER. For Evie, of course. Never mind what Evie thinks, Aveda's going to make sure it's perfect!

Hijinks and hilarity ensue, with a healthy dose of enraged Bridezillas and a demon on the loose. Will Aveda learn to chill? Or will her obsessiveness with doing things perfectly drive everyone else batshit crazy? I'm not telling; you'll just have to pick this up and check it out for yourself.

drey's rating: Pick it up!

Pre-review thoughts:

I probably won't pick this series back up for a while, but if I do, it'll be for my girl Annie.

I didn't finish the first book because I didn't like Nate and Evie as a couple. I think I can kind of tell how this one is going to end, so I'd rather imagine my own fanfic for it.

A change in narrator from the first book, which was initially unsettling, but it ended up being really interesting to view the inter-character relationships from a different view point. It remains a really interesting mythos and the characters are very likeable whilst being pretty flawed people.

Wherein childhood traumas manifest as demons, which is convenient for punching. A little afterschool-specially, but SO much better than the Hallmark Channel.

This was a great follow up the first book. I do like the character perspective shifts. And giving more characters room to grow and change. I think the thing I love most about this series is how random the villains are. The first book we got flesh eating cupcakes, this book was bridezillas. It's hilarious, it makes you cringe, love this sequel. Can't wait for the next.

Book 51 for 2022! 4/5 stars for this adult superhero book! More hilarious "puppy" demons and antics in this book! Absolutely loving this series so far! Highly recommend!
