This is a really good book, great insights on love and how we are influenced in the way we think about love by patriarchy, gender stereotypes and nuclear family life. The only thing I would change is the Christian undertones and the chapters talking about Christianity. Can't we just care about this stuff without doing it for the heaven points?

Opened my third eye fr

One of the foundational feminist texts and it is very clear why, but as someone who has moved somewhat behind feminism 101, it was more a look back at the very basics than something that gave me much new to contemplate.

Great for introspecting about love. Definitely will read again to rethink love and relationships.

I finished this book a while ago, so TBH I don’t remember it that well. It’s observant and beautifully written, pulling from philosophy, history, religion, and hooks’ own eventful life. Instead of just focusing on romantic love (though that is the subject of part of the book), hooks takes a holistic approach that includes family ties, friendships, and societal values. I kept seeing quotes from it on social media, so I was at times disappointed that the entire book wasn’t quite as good as the specific pull quotes. It’s definitely still worth reading, but the problem with its popularity is you have likely already seen its best parts quoted somewhere else.
