There were parts of this that really spoke to me. However, I really disliked the focus on religion that permeated the last half of this book.

Despite having been written a quarter of a century ago, this book offers some excellent critique on our current views on love and relationships from upbringing and societal standpoints. That being said, you can definitely tell it was published in 1999 by how heteronormative and outdated some of the takes are, especially past the halfway point of the book. The spiritual (religious, really) aspect of it in particular rubbed me the wrong way as it always does, so I’d say to treat it like every other self help book: read it, take what resonates with you, leave the rest behind.

4.5 stars--a bit of inconsistency (but aren't we all). worth the read

Still not a nonfiction girlie (I picked this up for my sister). The writing is great and very thought provoking, so I get it.
