Technically I didn’t finish this BUT YKW FUCK THAT this took years off my life. I do not recommend. I do not see how everyone does bc?? It’s not even just that it feels preachy (as fuck) and self-helpy it was as laborious as reading essential reading for philo 2 & 3 where those hundreds of years old white men would go around in circles and call it critical thinking. I can’t believe I put myself through this (willingly) during the summer at that. So much precious reading time wasted over this fuckass book.

Right I agree with the premises of her argument that love is a transformative power and love as an antidote to social alienation and individualism. But a lot of it just felt like a preachy sermon rather than a nuanced and engaging critique. Lots of clichés and very utopian in its perspective, truth, love, communion, spirituality etc etc. hooks claims that her work is unlike any other self help books but felt exactly like it. In fairness it was published over 20 years ago so maybe it’s just dated?

Read this with a wonderful friend! I think there were a lot of wise things said in this book but a lot of it is spent reflecting on quotes from other authors. I also think this book would perhaps resonate more with people who are very religious?

I guess can see why this book was considered rather groundbreaking when it was first published, but it just didn’t work for me at all. I found it quite repetitive, and much of it didn’t feel relevant to my own life or experiences. I was also surprised by how much of the discussion centered around Christianity, which I hadn’t expected going in.
