This did everything you’d want a sequel to do: progressed character arcs, advanced the world-building, increased the stakes. This book did a great job of having its own arc and story while connecting to the first book and setting up the final instalment.
Those statues were exquisitely carved, without exception; that was what the Egyptians were really good at, along with organized religion and civil engineering.
This was a reread but I still love bartimaus and I quite liked the added narrative of kitty so we got the view of a commoner. As quick paced and witty as ever.

The problem with these books has always been that they didn't have enough Bartimaeus in them. I realize that structurally there have to be other POVs to develop the plot, and this is a solid plot that's probably more relevant to me today than it was when I read it as a kid. But here's the thing: No matter how good the plot is (and it's just fine. solid. not GREAT, but good), I don't care about it as much as I care about Bartimaeus. I would literally read 6 volumes of Bartimaeus sniping at a grocery list in footnotes. I don't care. Jonathan Stroud, wherever you are now, no matter how people complained about Ring of Solomon, I hope you know: It doesn't matter how little anyone cared about the plot, Bartimaeus was and is still great and I would still read 17 volumes of him sniping at a car manual (while having soft asides about Ptolemy).
