Brief review follows

The biggest of surprises and makes me wonder what I was thinking when reading book 1 which I found barely ok.

I listened to this on audio and perhaps I am more forgiving on audio or this book was just a big step up. Either way this worked so well for me. I found the plot led cohesive and loved all the POVs. The introduction of a new POV character really helped here and provided the necessary contrast to Bartimaeus and Nathaniel.

I want to be nit picky- because how could this land so much better than book 1 (??!!!) - but honestly I am not sure what I would change. And for that I am giving this a 5 stars. Despite my personal taste this was so well done - won me over.

um well bartimaeus is mean, nathanial is mean, everyone's just mean to each other and then in the last 50 pages bada bing bada BOOM BAD GUYS

i can see the appeal of like, barti's snark, but overall the major problems of the first continue one, i did however love the worldbuilding, like i like learning about barti's past, and the current political climate etc etc

I liked this one a fair bit more than the first, mainly because of the addition of Kitty.

I have a become a fan of Jonathan Stroud after the first book. Though this second installment of the Bartimaeus Trilogy is not as exciting as the first one, with a slimy long-haired git with a ridiculous fashion sense of a main character John Mandrake, the plot twists and Barty's humor keep us wanting for more.
