3.5 stars mainly for Kitty Jones. I love her whereas in the first book, I didn't feel much of a connection with the main male and djinni characters because they were fairly retched. A lot of chapters are from Kitty's POV in this book and I enjoyed her part in the Resistance. I don't tend to like books with depressing settings (seriously, the wizarding world in this series is THE MEANEST group of people ever) and annoying characters (looking at you, Nathaniel). However, the clever writing and interesting world building raise it to 2.5 stars and Kitty gets a star all her own for being awesome. And none for Nathaniel.

And so continues the story of the worst teenager you've ever seen. It really seems like Nathaniel's arc is just an exercise in him missing the point. I hope his character arc doesn't end with "too little, too late".
Compelling characters and plot, and the narrative structure of Bartimaeus providing the outsider perspective (with the advantage of experience and hindsight) while being forced to participate in the story is an interesting approach.
Loved to see more of Kitty in this second installment, and learn more about her motivations and character through her past experiences. Her and Nathaniel really make very good foils for each other.
I was hoping for some trio shenanigans near the end, but that was a wishful thought that would have required a lot of maturing from Nat real fast.

The second in the excellent Bartimaeus series. This is one of my favorite series of books. See my review for [b:The Amulet of Samarkand|478600|The Amulet of Samarkand (Bartimaeus Trilogy, #1)|Jonathan Stroud|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1275207089s/478600.jpg|1121748]. Read them!

I really can't stand Nathaniel or Kitty and they had become the main character. There wasn't enough Bartimaeus to keep my attention.
Much preferred Lockwood and Co series.

The second book of the Bartimauus Trilogy definitely gets better, and the characters get more interesting.
