This was a very cute and quick read.

The book is about Millie who's from America but then goes to a school in Scotland. She meets her roommate Flora and they don't get along at first. Millie finds out Flora is actually a princess and after getting to know Flora better, she falls for her...

I actually liked this book more than I thought I would. I thought it'd be an 'ok read' but it's actually an amazing read. The romance between Millie and Flora was so cute to read about. It was a slowburn romance and they have so many cute moments that you just want them to be together and the pay off was amazing.

Okay, so I'm not stupid I wasn't expecting a Pride and Prejudice quality romance novel, but this was still a bit dumber than I expected.
I don't want to sound rude, but my God, I could feel that this was written by an American woman. Not like it's a bad thing, but you know how some Americans have this "idea" about living in Europe and Europeans, which is like so far from the truth. I got that from this book.
So the plot was a bit dumb, okay I wasn't reading for that anyway. I've read it for the lesbian princess, the enemies to lovers trope, and because THEY WERE ROOMMATES! Well, Flora was great, I loved her, but Millie was so boring... Her whole personality was just being American and liking rocks. Don't tell me this was enough for princess Flora to fell in love with her. And I don't know the romance was just a little bit flat. They just kinda unlocked each other tragic backstories on a hiking trip and they were already in love? I don't know.
I really liked Saks though (was this her name?), I thought she was going to be the "mean girl", but she was actually a good and supportive friend. Although she was a bit stereotypical but who wasn't in this book.
Also, I listened to the audiobook and oh my God it was a whole different level of fun. I think it was read by Karissa Vacke, who did just in one book southern American, British, and Scottish accents too. Sometimes also pretending to be an old Scottish guy. I seriously laughed my butt off.

Still just as adorable as the first time I read it

3.5
Overall it was a cute story, but maybe a bit too young for my taste. I think if I’d read it a couple years ago I would have enjoyed it much more.
+ in my opinion the ending was way too cliche and unrealistic to be believable.

3,5*

This was such an easy read that I ended up devouring it in one go. Who wouldn’t, when the world is exploding and there’s fluffy f/f romance to bury ourselves in? The plot was simple and that was fine, because the focus was definitely on character and relationship development, which worked really well for me. This was sold to me as rivals-to-friends-to-lovers and that was exactly the arc we took. I was really pleased when the rivals-to-friends section wasn’t hurried for the sake of romance. We got to see Flora and Millie at each other’s throats in that catty way that only teenage girls at school can manage before their relationship developed in a way that felt very natural, with a slow climb from rivals to friends and an unexpected sudden slide into love. I also liked that there were reasons for the rivalry put in place that made sense, explained Flora’s behaviour and weren’t just disappeared for the sake of romance.

All of the relationships in the book were equally satisfying and solid. Millie isn’t running away from a problem family, she’s got a family and support system that she loves. Flora and her brother have a strong, loving relationship that leads to them supporting each other rather than fighting. I just love to read about characters with healthy families behind them – long gone is the YA trope of getting the family out of the way and forgetting about them. The friendships in the book were equally satisfying and I loved Millie’s relationship with Lee, Saks and Perry. They’re wholesome, supportive friends, and I was feeling warm and fluffy the whole time I was reading. My only real criticism is that the ending felt a little rushed, and I desperately wanted to read about Flora meeting Millie’s family and friends. At least there was one single fanfiction waiting to scratch that itch.

I'm so sad that this got so boring. There's so little FF YA (at least compared to MM anyway) that I was thrilled to find this, but the characters felt so flat - especially the sides, who were hardly fleshed out, and Millie's friends and family back in America who felt mostly forgotten after the first few chapters. The plot felt a bit too basic and formulaic, and I found my eyes glazing over for the last 50 pages.

I wasn't aware this was ROOMMATES TO LOVERS bless up

6/4/19 update

I'm loving the queer royal romcom trend we've got going. It's beautiful.

And I reeeeally liked this book! For some reason, [b:Prince Charming|43355180|Prince Charming (Royals, #1)|Rachel Hawkins|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1546558519s/43355180.jpg|57561606] didn't click with me, but Her Royal Highness really did! I love the boarding school setting, and I loved the progression of the romance. It was slow burn, but not so slow burn that nothing happened until the last ten pages of the book. Millie is such a wonderful character, and she's so much like me when I was in high school. Focused, determined, but also not immune to her friends persuading her into various hijnks.

Flora was also wonderful, but for totally different reasons. Her character development was off-the-charts good. She has a hard exterior, bu slowly Millie chips away at it and we get to see her true personality underneath.

There were cameos from the Royal Wreckers, Seb included, and from Daisy and Miles from the first book, so if you loved them, they do make a return, though not a large one.

All in all, this is a fun, quick, extremely enjoyable romp through the Scottish countryside. Definitely recommend!
