I didn’t know who Kate was, but I loved hearing her tell her life.
I grew up idolizing Mulgrew in her role as Captain Janeway. This was a fascinating read. She's had a really interesting life. Sometimes not a very sympathetic character, I appreciate her honesty and unflinching devotion to herself first. Rather inspiring.
Interesting, But Flaky. In this memoir, Kate Mulgrew - known best, depending on age and interest, for 70s era show Ryan's Hope, 90s era show Star Trek: Voyager, or 2010s era show Orange Is The New Black - describes her life from being literally born with teeth up until around the turn of the Millenium, when she was still filming Voyager.
And she does a remarkable job of keeping the reader interested in what happens next. Her prose has the qualities of the poet she once wanted to be.
But she plays with the timeline too much, often skipping around or losing threads entirely, only to pick them up later with no explanation. And what she makes seem in the book as merely days in some cases appears to have actually been years.
But the biggest sin, and the reason this 2015 memoir feels incomplete, is the abrupt ending. Wherein she sets up a particular meeting that had been years in the making... and then ends with a literal closed door, never revealing anything beyond the moment she stepped into that particular room.

Interesting if exaggerated memoir focusing on motherhood and love
DAMN, but Kate Mulgrew can tell the hell out of a story.
If you're interested in reading Born with Teeth, I very highly recommend the audiobook, because Kate Mulgrew can also read the hell out of a story.

More of a 3.5 star in my opinion but a lot of that is more I was expecting more and not really anything against the writing itself. I base my ratings on my enjoyment of a story and not on the quality of the writing. But In fact it this is crisply written and very honest and self deprecating. I just felt that things were brought up and than not followed through with. It was like a tiny glimpse into something but you don't get the whole story and that is my main complaint about this biography. That being said I think she is a fascinating women and very strong willed and opinionated and she definitely is one hell of an actress. I think I just wanted more about her various acting jobs and the people she worked with. You do learn a lot about her family life and she had a heck of an unorthodox upbringing. And she had lived through some very traumatic experiences and I admire her honestly for talking so openly about them . Definitely worth a read
