Kate's memior was incredibly well written. Do yourself a huge favor and go with the audiobook on this one, hearing her read it just enriches the whole book so much more.
To be honest, I've never seen any of Kate's work except for the episode of SVU she was in. (Yeah, I'm one of the last 3 people alive who haven't seen OITNB lol). The main reason I picked this up was that I live in her hometown and thought it would be neat to find out more about her and her life. I'm so glad I did!

I listened to this on audiobook, which turned out to be a good choice. Kate Mulgrew is a beautiful writer, very lyrical, and to hear her accent work was a real treat. Some people may be a bit miffed not to hear in-depth details about Star Trek: Voyager, but I think it was smart (and also maybe limited by the franchise). Her life itself was fascinating, almost like a Midwestern Southern gothic with a touch of Ryan's Hope.
I was not expecting this to be such high-quality writing. Because I love Star Trek: Voyager and Captain Janeway, I thought I'd give the audiobook a shot figuring that even if it's bad, it'll surely be read expertly by Mulgrew. And it was read expertly, but it also was legitimately great writing. It's downright poetic, especially the beginning about her childhood with the endless supply of babies filling her parents' bassinet and her childhood shenanigans which may or may not have led to one of those babies' deaths. Kate Mulgrew has had a very interesting life so far and I'm so glad a woman who has achieved relative fame for her acting also wrote Born with Teeth, which clearly exhibits that she is multi-talented, not to mention extremely charming. I kinda love her now.
I loved listening to this as an audiobook. I absolutely LOVED this memoir of Kate's life-beginning with her early Dubuque family life--so many similarities to the stories I've heard from my older sisters about growing up in Dubuque. Phenomenal storytelling and as it was read by the author herself even better!

I have always been a fan of Kate Mulgrew's acting, I loved her in Orange is the New Black as Red and Captain Janeway in Star Trek Voyager, so I decided to pick up her biography at the library. What an exciting read! Mulgrew has experienced tragic and beautiful life events. She comes from a rather large and eccentric family with strong bonds. She started her career path at a young age, supported by her artistic mother, and she's multitalented, as noted in her acting abilities and her writing abilities. She began in the theatre, which is her passion and has had an equal presence on the screen. Mulgrew also discusses her love and her regrets and how the two intermingle. I chose to listen to the audio format narrated by Mulgrew, making the experience more memorable and impactful. I would recommend it to those that have enjoyed Mulgrew's performances, whether on stage or the screen.
I just loved reading this. A well-written autobiographical memoir and a great life story from an actress that personified grit.
