I wanted so much more from the first woman starlet commander. Yes, this is her story, but it was only all about her - i wanted a bit more of context, struggle in the industry- if any, she certainly didn't make it seem as if she had any obstacles; comparison of stage v. tv.
“Grief moves through the system much as love does. It seeks expression. So I put my grief where it naturally belonged, in the company of an old and experienced wound.”
I could listen to Mulgrew tell stories all day. Her voice is rough, yet soothing. Her writing is lovely. She’s had an intriguing life, but something throws me off a bit. The ego, maybe? Nonetheless, I liked this memoir.

I wrote a review of this and my computer decided to crash. Not going to try again. Two stars, disappointing that Kate kept us at arms length through this memoir, and the Star Trek related part of her life came only and the end, and was very short.
Kate Mulgrew has lived a very unique life, that's no doubt. Her memoir, however, sounds like Dr. Fraiser Crane; pompous and condescending. Typically, I enjoy memoirs and don't find them to be so arrogant but this one was not the case. Kate is smarter than you, more creative than you, deeper than you, wilder than you, more broken than you, more feminine than you, more masculine than you, more everything than you. She is the epitome of what you imagine a theater actress to be; dramatic and conceited. I really wanted to like this book but instead I found myself rolling my eyes.
So so worth hearing the audio version - what an iconic, powerful voice! I had no idea what was in store, and I learned so much. The Audible includes an interview between Kate Mulgrew and Rosie O'Donnell that really ties a bow on the experience.

What a refreshing biography. Kate was honest and raw and told stories of work, childhood and love. Bring a fan of her Star Trek years, I learnt about how she gained the role and funny anecdotes.
I opted for the audio version and Kate brought such raw emotion to this reading. Highly recommend this

A little overwrought, but enjoyable in audiobook form.
The overarching theme of Born With Teeth is the importance of “the work” (acting) to make it through the most difficult times in life. For Mulgrew, these difficult times included living through siblings’ deaths, relationship upheaval, sexual assault, and the excruciating pain of giving her daughter up for adoption when she was twenty-two.
Even though there is not much in the story about Mulgrew's time on Star Trek: Voyager and the book ends before her stint as Red Reznikov on Orange is the New Black, fans shouldn't feel cheated in any way. You will feel like you've had an opportunity to explore something much more important than behind-the-scenes trivia - the soul of a woman who throws herself head-on at opportunities, who follows her heart, who endures immense pain but channels it into her work and survives - not a 90s TV superwoman but a real woman sustained by family, friends and immense courage.

had i not already loved Kate Mulgrew, this book would have given me no other choice. she is unabashedly fierce, honest, and strong. i love her, i love how hard she worked for what she's got. i love her no regrets honesty about her lovers, friends, work, and family.
