So Cute!

A beautiful way to look at one’s own culture and remember those we’ve lost. Mindy is all around precious and completely hilarious! I also sincerely hope she starts that Indian food show she jokingly refers to!

This is the first of six books in Mindy Kaling's Nothing Like I Imagined (Except for Sometimes) Series. These books are short stories about her life. In this edition, Kaling talks about her life growing up as a non-practicing Hindu. She is a first-generation Hindu-American whose divorced parents met in Nigeria and come from different areas of India, and different sects of Hinduism. After coming to America, they embraced some American traditions and celebrations, and only sometimes celebrated Hindi traditions. After the birth of her daughter, Kaling contemplated whether she should continue to be a "kind of Hindu" or learn more about her religion to pass on to her daughter.

Cute story. I generally like Kaling's humor. I plan to read the rest of the series.

Why do we cling to a religion that we don't really practice? For connection.
Mindy talks about getting in touch with her Hindu roots for the benefit of her daughter, and the sense of community it brings.

As with all Mindy's writing, the story is told with humor and warmth, in a way that makes it both entertaining and relatable.

I'm a little late to the game but I love The Mindy Project and am now a full on Mindy Kaling fan!! I loved this novella about her trying to decide if she should raise her daughter Hindu. She's so funny and real and a little over the top but I find her so enjoyable!!

This book is very relatable for anyone that is stuck between two cultures and they are having children. How much do you want them to be apart of your heritage/culture? That is a question many parents struggle with.

"What if only kind of knowing your family’s heritage is actually kind of lame? For Mindy Kaling, the number one bestselling author of Why Not Me?, the search for an answer begins with an Edible Arrangement of chocolate-covered strawberries and a Hindu priest.
Like Kelly Kapoor on The Office, Mindy is engaged with her Indian heritage to the extent that it is fun and convenient. So apart from a tolerance for spicy foods and an appreciation for Ravi Shankar, Mindy isn’t all that Hindu. Her daughter’s Jewish godfather—TV and film’s B.J. Novak—prompts her to reconsider her religious beliefs and ask herself: How Indian do I want my daughter to be?"
