This book has some solid moments. Good medium spice…some of the time. MMC came off as a creep for 70% of scenes. Poppy is not a good narrator. I will say, her world building is kind of all over the place but it almost feels like I will accept whatever to get to the next chapter!

This book has exactly one thing over From Blood and Ash. It felt like shit actually happened. Was any of it good? No. Not in the slightest. I have no clue what's going on at the end of the second book in this series. This is a cash grab, and you can not convince me otherwise. By the time you reach the end of a second book in a series, you should know who the antagonist is and why they are the antagonist. You should have a general idea of the world the main character came from. The major players of the story should have all made an appearance, and you should have a pretty good idea of the trajectory of the plot. Instead, we get Poppy, the most special Special Girl who was ever special and Queen Ileana, who is the antagonist but has never actually appeared on page, and I frankly don't know if she ever will be.

Also, if anyone happens to see this. This book should have a trigger warning for SA. The way Casteel treats Poppy's consent is awful. On that, I hate their relationship. It isn't even well developed enough to call toxic. It doesn't make any sense why these two are so deeply in love. Poppy should hate him. And no, I do not accept the "explanation" provided in the story.

The worldbuilding is as shallow as a glass of water you spilled on your kitchen floor at 3am. Throwing in random details does not a well-built fantasy world make.

If anyone was wondering, there are 604 ellipsis in this book. Yes, I counted so my numbers could be slightly off.

I love the concept of this series and find the characters very fun, so I'm still in and will be continuing. An interesting take on the vampire/werewolf story, with spicy sexual tension.
The plot of the story was already not fast moving and it slows majorly in this book.
70% of the way through the book, they are still in the same location talking about doing the same thing they were talking about at the end of the first book.

My struggle with this book is that the FMC/narrator THINKS TOO MUCH. 😂 Her internal monologue is repetitive and long. Towards the end of the book I started just skipping her thoughts and moving on to the next dialogue to cope. But getting to the plot advancement was worth it.

This book is nothing more than traveling and poorly written smut. More than once there is non-consensual sexual relations. The characters have no development. They’re insipid, boring, and horny. There is no plot.

Great spice, fantasy, character development. Liked it even better than the first book!

I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first one, but I did still enjoy it. There are certain parts that felt a bit too drawn out and there are certain things that get repeated too often (gee I wonder what Cas smells like?). But I do mostly like the characters (many more than Poppy and Cas) and I do enjoy the plot. Medium pace fantasy novel with a decent spice level. Interested to see if the third one bounces back for me.
