The In-Laws

James Caine

3.8 AVERAGE

dark mysterious tense medium-paced

If I had a dollar for every time the author used the word "smirk(ed)" I would have enough to buy Starbucks every day for the rest of the year. This book lost a star because of the number of times Caine wrote that a character smirked - there are so many other descriptive words and I rolled my eyes every time I read the word.

The plot was pretty good with many twists, turns and surprises that I didn't expect and it kept me on my toes.

I’ve never written a review for a book before, but for this one I had to. It was so bad, over use of italics when not necessary, and too much use of the word ‘smirk’. The story was unbelievable, and too many spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. Not good, don’t recommend.

Chelsea is visiting her in-laws for the fist time this weekend. Hendy is very excited to introduce his wife to his parents, but Chelsea has a lot of reservations, even more so when she finds out they live off the grid, in the middle of nowhere, in a cabin only accessible by a four-hour hike...
I read this in one sitting, it's a short and fast read, creepy and full of twists. There is a lot of foreshadowing (there even is foreshadowing about foreshadowing), you know from the get-go that something is off. The writing is a bit disjointed at times, but the premise is amazing!
I received and advance review copy for free from NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
