Liked this one a lot. Fantastic art, of course, and a very cool modern mythology take.

The first issue is mostly set-up, but manages to do it without seeming like mere expositing. Each issue ends with Laila (an incarnation of a Hindu/Vedic goddess of death who has been “let go” from the pantheon due to a human scientist who created immortality, making he role redundant) dying in some sort of accident after an encounter with the future-to-be scientist, Darius. First when he is a young boy, and then progressively further and further into his life.

The tone is very philosophical and contemplative, but not in a boring or preachy way - it’s an engaging and human story that carries an emotional punch (the issue with Wei and the Chinese template story hit my right in the feels). What’s more, the creators nail the ending.

3.5 stars. A good, maybe even Gaimanesque premise. I prefer a slightly cleaner art style. Satisfying conclusion-- this is a standalone graphic novel.

Best graphic novel I’ve read. The story is great and the pictures are phenomenal.
