Null and Void by R. Moody is a dark fantasy world where the gifted are controlled and sold. But not all those who should have gifts are useful, and some never have this gift manifested. Following the retired Silent Assassin as she is given her next mission - a rescue rather than an assassination - we embark on a journey with secrets, betrayal, and rage.
I loved certain characters in this book and the different abilities were interesting! I think if you are looking for a moody fantasy with some twist and turns then this might interest you! I would also say if you like SJM's work, that's the best correlation my mind went to for this book!

Null & Void takes you on a physical and emotional adventure as you journey with Mika and a motley found family crew across foreign lands steeped with danger and action, beautifully written settings, great banter, mystery, political intrigue, and phenomenal LGBTQ+ rep and cast.
The plot is great, full of depth and mystery with a well executed big twist. There are shocking reveals and "smaller" twists that are good, too, but THE one is just chef's kiss!
The characters are amazing. All of the MCs are well developed, complex, full of nuance and depth. I want nothing more than to give all the cast a "classic Bitty slam-hug."
I love that the cast is diverse in all ways. While I myself am not non-binary, I feel Moody did an amazing job writing a NB character. I hope that one day soon a diverse in all ways cast is commonplace.
Moody did a great job with world building. I can't wait to see even more of it. Magic system is well explained. The settings are described so well, encompassing all of your scenes, that it was a joy to imagine. You feel like you're right there with them, physically and emotionally.
The pacing is great, I couldn't put it down. That ending - I both love and hate Moody currently. Book 2 can't come out soon enough.
Moody's prose is so good. She walks the fine line between descriptive and purple prose like a pro (even though this is her debut).
Dialogue is great, it feels natural and flows well. There are a number of scenes that made me chuckle, a couple that had me tearing up, and some that had me spitting mad (for the cast).
I love that this book examines important topics like slavery, racism, xenophobia, etc.
I love the nicknames in this book, especially Daddy Beans and Firecat. I love that it comes with a gorgeous, detailed map and a pronunciation guide.
The found family in Null & Void might be my favorite found family in literature.
I don't love that the FMC is mentioned as being so small a number of times. I would love if that wasn't so common in lit.
Patron of the Divine (or just the Divine, maybe) could've used a bit more explanation, in my opinion. Maybe I missed it, or the š ending made me forget.
If you like Fantasy with some Romance, give this one a try. Spice-wise, 1š¶
If you like Daughter of No Worlds, Gild, or Graceling, you would probably enjoy Null & Void.
Go add R. Moody's debut novel to your TBR - you don't want to miss this one.
Please check the author's site for TWs prior to reading.
I was fortunate enough to read an eARC of this from the author. This is my unbiased review. Thank you for allowing me to read this absolute gem early, @rmoodyauthor

How is this a debut novel!!! I devoured this dark romantic fantasy in less than a day. Let's start with the absolutely gorgeous cover and map! Im always sold with a good map!
Mika is all my fav things in a FMC - hilarious, dark, twisty, a little broken, and fierce as all hell. Sunyanile is a dark world where folks with powers are sold and essentially slaves, Mika the silent assassin is sold and her life begins. There is mystery, found family, tension, and all the twists. I absolutely loved all the side characters and the parts they play in Mika's growth. The characterizations are so gooood! There are some amazingly hilarious lines, and the banter is perfection. One of my fav lines that sold me early on "who would of thought buying underwear would turn out to be such a fun excursion"
Ugh my heart absolutely broke during this book and you will know when. Dark themes throughout this book and check your triggers. So much left to discover in this world and I cannot wait!
I'm so grateful for this ARC opportunity and these are my honest thoughts. I can't wait for you all to experience this world and characters on August 15th!

This book yāall⦠I knew I was going to like it just from the vibe and the teasers that the author had released previously, but I was not prepared for just how much I would love it.
The characters are all well-rounded, flawed people which I love - perfect is boring! The settings were so stunning and the storyline had me on the edge of my seat multiple times. I laughed, I cried ⦠hard (IYKYK), and I got very hungry. Our FMC has a love affair with food and spices, and it really only made me love her more ācause, same Mike, same.
So many sensitive, heavy topics are covered in this book but they are handled respectively and in a way that isnāt TOO jarring for the average reader (though, mind your triggers of course). There were so many emotions, and so many times where you could see a characterās history influence their reactions or choices and it only helped to build up these characters into realistic-feeling people even more.
The foreshadowing was there, for sure, and there was enough to have me forming theories and thoughts but not so much that the twists didnāt still catch me by surprise when they popped up - the perfect level!
And can we talk about the book itself for a second? The COVER, the pronunciation guide, the map - all of it simply incredible.
If you like your fantasy with a side of darkness, and a little romance - Null and Void is the book for you. It is the perfect recipe for a good time!

Once an assassin, always an assassin.
We have a pronunciation guide, a glossary, the most stunning map in existence & content warnings that sound like the shopping list to make a great book.
The prelude. What a way to open!
I donāt know what words I can use to explain how phenomenal this book truly is.
I will be honest with you, I felt a whole lot of emotions. I giggled, I was teary eyes, I was angry, I was laughing, I was sobbing, I was kicking my feet.
R. Moody has created such a gorgeous book, I fell in love with the characters, the different settings, the friendships and obviously the food (sorry I cannot get over how good all the food sounded). There are definitely parts that emotionally wrecked me.
The nightmares. These were emotional. These were the moments I needed to put the book down, close my eyes and take a breath. These were heavy, but written in a sensitive and delicate manner where you could understand their purpose in the story without it being severely jarring.
The nickname. Did I highlight every time it was said. Yes. Yes I did.
I loved feeling like I was travelling alongside Mika and discover different parts of Sunyanile. I also really enjoyed learning about the rules, laws, and history of the nation as the story unfolded.
That ending !!!!!!!! Sorry. Can I have book 2, like now? Please š
Also would not be opposed to some recipes. This had me craving stew and pies!!
