Cléopâtre mis à part (comme j'ai dit, difficile de juger), Le Combat des Chefs est le premier à égaler Astérix chez les Goths en terme du rythme ininterrompu de l'humour, aussi bien dans les gags que dans le visuel et les jeux de mots. Rien que les noms des personnages sont savoureux, comme Aplusbégalix ou Plutoqueprévus.

One of my favourites from the series, this sees Getafix losing his mind (during a kidnapping attempt) and can longer make the magic potion. He does concoct a range of interesting other potions with hilarious (but never fatal) results. It always bothered my that they never bothered to heal similarly afflicted Psychoanalytix who they had brought in to help Getafix though.
These books are full of bright, fun and delightful characters who go on various adventures and get to beat up a bunch of Roman soldiers. Accompanying the story and the characters is a plethora of clever puns and word play that the translators should get a medal for. There are always a few gags or phrases in Latin that may mean nothing to the non-Latin speakers (such as myself) but Google can lend a helping hand there.

Estamos en el año 50 antes de Jesucristo. Toda la Galia está ocupada por los romanos… ¿Toda? ¡No! Una aldea poblada por irreductibles galos resiste, todavía y como siempre, al invasor. Y la vida no es fácil para las guarniciones de legionarios romanos en los reducidos campamentos de Babaorum, Aquarium, Laudanum y Petibonum...
Los Astérix son otra de las series con las que crecí, junto a Tintín y tantas otras. Ya desde el principio el planteamiento de la serie es genial. Una aislada aldea resiste en solitario la conquista del Imperio Romano, que ha tomado completamente la Galia. Cuentan con la ayuda de una poción mágica que les hace invencibles en combate. Y corren mil aventuras, por todos los países del Imperio. La ventaja que este planteamiento otorga es que puedes tener aventuras estancas que te dejan explorar un aspecto cada vez, y te sale una serie completísima.
Los nombres también son geniales: Obélix, que no es gordo sino bajo de pecho, Astérix, que es más soso pero da nombre a la serie, Ideafix, Asurancetúrix y todos los demás tienen cada uno un toque de humor.
En el libro de los godos, por ejemplo, los autores aprovechan y hacen un montón de chistes sobre los alemanes, alternando los tópicos con algunas observaciones muy agudas:
Los autores repiten este truco con Astérix y Obélix viajando a Grecia, Inglaterra, España, Bélgica, Suiza, Egipto... En cada uno de los tomos presenciamos la genialidad de una historia bien construida con multitud de guiños al lector.
Había miles de detalles interesantes, como que cada pueblo tuviera su propia tipografía:
O cuando Astérix entra en la Legión y se enfrenta al pestilente rancho que todos encuentran repugnante excepto el British:
De niño, obviamente, mucho de esto me pasaba inadvertido. Yo leía los tebeos para ver qué pasaba. He comprobado que resisten perfectamente una relectura de adulto, lo cual refleja, una vez más, su genialidad. Imprescindibles.

The Romans suggest a single combat between Vitalstatistix and the Gallo-Roman Chief, Cassius Ceramix of Linoleum, the loser would forfeit his entire tribe to the winner. Obelix accidentally strikes Getafix with a menhir, causing amnesia and insanity. Vitalstatistix is forced to win without the magic potion.

Disaster beckons for Asterix et al after a "light tap" from a menhir thrown by Asterix leaves Getafix with amnesia, just as Vitalstatistix needs more potion to help him defeat a challenger from a neighbouring (collaborating) village.
