Listened to the audiobook. Would like to revisit at some point when I have a little more time to dive into the individual stories.

In the days of global pandemic, environmental catastrophe, and extreme political cynicism, it was weirdly heartening to be swept up in the disaster that was the dust bowl. Egan tells the stories of those who survived in stunning detail. Like much of the suffering from Covid-19, the tragedy of the dust bowl was that it was both preventable and somehow unstoppable at the same time.

As drought lingers in Central Texas and rain causes flash floods in the Hill Country an hour from me, I found myself stuck in this book. Because the devastation is still happening, both to the people and to the land.

I always enjoy learning parts of American history I knew little about. This one was well told using a lot of personal narratives. Perhaps a little on the dramatic side in its take, but also that may not be very surprising given the topic.

This may be particularly interesting to fans of Wendell Berry as it gives a broader historical perspective to challenges and decline of American farmers in the mid 20th century.
