A whole lot of words about nothing.

I'm teetering between 3 and 4 stars. I liked it but did I REALLY like it? I'm not sure. I am glad I was introduced to this author. The characters are realistic, fast and fresh. The writing is fast and fresh. The story at times is depressing yet funny. It was a unique dark comedy that I can see how it will easily translate to film.

DID NOT FINISH: 40%

While some snippets were truly funny, the rest was just ick. The main character could not describe any interaction with any other person without some sort of sexual content. From sizing up women (literally) to questioning the prowess of other men, it was just a little too much of an obsession to be funny.

This book started strong, but for the last 50 pages, I have grown bored. Bored of Judd's inability to take accountability, bored of the casual misogyny, just not interested in how this ends. I do like books with unlikeable characters, even unlikeable narrators. There is a world where I finish this book happily. But I have so many fun things waiting for me to read and letting this book go is okay with me in favor of those other fun things.

I‰ЫЄm having a hard time with this because, was Judd supposed to even be likable?
‰ЫПShe was chunky in that way that men like‰Ыќ
‰ЫПWomen of a certain age shouldn‰ЫЄt giggle‰Ыќ
Huh??
I couldn‰ЫЄt figure out if he was supposed to be a bit of an asshole, or if we were really supposed to buy into this ‰ЫПnice guy‰Ыќ personality.
The writing (outside of the objectification of every single female character) was good, and I liked the story.
Overall, ehh. Will be interested to see how I like the movie!

Five enthusiastic stars! I'd never heard of Jonathan Tropper, but this is one of the my favorite books of this genre. I don't think I've ever laughed out loud while reading a book more than while reading this. The audible version also is perfect -- the narrator certainly understood how to deliver the lines.

Almost immediately after starting, I thought of David Sedaris -- the book is chock full of unique but often completely relatable insights into life and relationships.

I already purchased The Book of Joe and will be reading it next. If you're looking for light-ish reading about family and relationships laced with laugh-out-loud humor and amazing insights, read this book.

I watched the movie first. This was very similar to the movie. It was a quick light read (even thought the topics were pretty heavy). It was quite a bit raunchy, though that didn't bother me. Quick, easy, light, summer reading book.
