Been reading this the whole week. Started off kinda difficult cos it's sort of an older book and they were built different. But I gotta say...
I actually ended up enjoying that shit. Jane is so badass and I'm happy the cover did not disappoint me cos she didn't annoy me in any way and FINALLY we have me an actual badass in our hands. Was an interesting read fo sho. Where has she been all my life

Jane gave an interesting start but I'll withhold judgement until I'm a bit further along with this series. It shows promise but I'm hoping that it will become a tad more gripping. I felt like I could step away from Jane at any time and not feel guilty about it. :(

The plot point of trying to find the rogue vamp was often very, very confusing. I realize the main character was confused too, but I couldn't even make the realizations when she did without stopping to rethink the whole book. Also, I have a hard time with unpronounceable names and words, so I had a hard time tracking who was who, what was what, and where was where. In a couple of places there were long detailed histories of unrelated topics like tea (yes, tea). I like tea, but even I was bored during these narratives.

Ok, this one surprised me. I think I may enjoy this series more than Mercy Thompson.

Jane's past is VERY murky. She doesn't remember much at all. She's a shapeshifter + more. She can shapeshift into any shape, but mountain lion is her "default". Reasons why are revealed in the book.

She's a rogue vamp killer for hire (apparently I need to read the prequel for more details on how this comes to be). Her best friend is a witch ... who has a scary level talented 6 yr old (which isn't normal), who is Jane's godchild.

So.Many.Suitors ... Lots of set-ups for potential hook-ups for Jane. Rick, Leo (my current front-runner), Bruiser, Twins ... Jane has LOTS of options ... and unlike Mercy ... I'm pretty open on who she will ultimately decide on. I really like them all (unusual for me).

This really turned out to be a pretty interesting story. It's refreshing to see a lead character revising her outlook on species (in this case, non-rogue vamps). She's broading her opinions ... and glimpsing into her shadowed past. The twist on the rogue at the end was pretty awesome, and sets up issues for the 2nd book for her to deal with.

Great start to a new series. Already loaded up the 2nd book!

Man oh man! I love finding a series that starts with a big ol' bang. And that it takes place in New Orleans lends that extra little Gothic feel to the vampires and shapeshifters.
SKINWALKER has been on the shelf for about a year after I bought two books in Faith's Rogue Mage series, BLOODRING and SERAPHS. I fully expected to read those pretty much immediately, but they are still on Mt Git'r'Read and I kept hearing so many fab things about Jane Yellowrock, so I made it an imperative to read it soonest. I guess I have been in a vampire and shapeshifter kind of mood and I will be in a rogue mage kind of mood later in the year, probably sooner than too much later.
And..... I liked the premise and characters so damn much that I bought books two and three, BLOOD CROSS and MERCY BLADE pretty much immediately after finishing. I can't wait to read what Jane and the vampires (apparently they don't like being called 'vamps') and the hottie Cajun get up to next.
Five sparkly shapeshifting diamonds.....

I really like the switching back between Beast and Jane.

I got into this book through the Soulwood series but I still like Nell better.

I’ll keep reading though because her writing is very good.

Mercy is still the best Urban Fantasy badass though :)

DNF at 20 percent.

This did not age well. From the internalized misogyny of the protagonist (ugh girls wearing heels and eating salads I'm not like those girls I'm so tough) to the author misappropriating the Navajo concept of Skinwalkers to the Cherokee Nation. They are not the same thing. Also the Navajo nation historically dislikes the use of Skinwalkers in media. As Native American writer and historian Adrienne Keene explains:

“What happens when an author pulls this in, is we as Native people are now opened up to a barrage of questions about these beliefs and traditions,” said Keene, “but these are not things that need or should be discussed by outsiders.”

I'm not someone to immediately cry foul when an author about a culture/identity that is not theirs however this seems like quite a bit of negligence on the authors part.

Also the book's writing style was jarring and the main character was a tired version of previous well liked urban fantasy heroines.

I wasn't a huge fan of the "Beast" passages with the whole fragmented talk. I get what she was going for, it just isn't something I'm fond of personally. The rest was a solid story, it was worth reading, but probably not a keeper.
