I adored this. It’s so weird and the style of storytelling is different but We Could Be Rats was very similar so I didn’t have trouble following it!
Enid was so endearing and such a complex character. So many of her thoughts made me giggle and I was so interested in the “why” of what was going on! I liked that there was a little bit of a mystery to figure out and the way everything was revealed felt very powerful.
I really thought Polly was going to be a crazy person when we first met her but she ended up being such a lovely character. Her acceptance of Enid, quirks and all, was so sweet.
Really all of the characters were so nuanced and complex and I feel it’s a perfect reminder of everyone we meet being a fully formed human with their own experiences and emotions. We’re all just trying to navigate life with a parasite in our brain, ya know? Don’t let your parasite make you think you’re a bad person!
Anyway, another weird, endearing, silly, reflective read by Emily Austin. She’s quickly becoming a fave for me!

I was really enjoying this but the ending was so rushed that it just left me unsatisfied? It just felt like a lot of buildup for very little payoff

Wtf was this book?? It was described as funny, quirky, and witty, but to me it was truly just a super depressing series of non-events until everything explodes at the end. It felt so repetitive and like it went nowhere for so long, and it read like literary horror basically the entire time when it wasn’t categorized like that at all. I feel like I’m missing something here, because I don’t understand why this is one of Canada’s bestselling LGBTQIA+ novels. Maybe I’m just not literary enough to get why it’s such a big deal, idk. Honestly just wish I’d DNF’ed it instead of spending all that time reading through it.

I enjoyed the facts about space but I thought the rest of the book was a bit meh.
The portrayal of neurodivergence was believable and useful too. But the plot was non existent and I thought the trauma reveal/turning point was a bit non descript. On the other hand, this is exactly what makes it so believable- a simple breakdown in communication leading to years of low self esteem and feeling unloved.
An interesting book. Hadn't read anything like it before but not sure it's my thing.
