so many issues smh. first: horny dragons (ew), second: far too much cringy smut and descriptions of xaden. most importantly because i just finished and i am so fucking annoyed, the whole book talks about how smart and cunning violet is. she is so surprised when twice vernin survive fire attacks, after learning literally pages who that they can only be killed with this special type of knife (which she has on her possession)??? just one example of her mind numbing stupidity. and it takes her so long to piece together vernin dead->wyvern dead, even though it makes sense because she know that the vernin channel their makes to make them and she saw what happened when liam killed one??? i regret not dnfing when she first met xaden. also how is lightening power so cool and powerful??? a character can literally do so much shit with shadows??? also like this is a romance book? why so many killing of characters i like??? evil

DID NOT FINISH

People who enjoy fantasy, you deserve better. We all deserve better. There are far, FAR better dragon books out there than this. I am begging you to read them instead.

This was... insufferable to say the least. Violet is a mary-sue who's magically best at everything, and of course her "nerdiness" isn't too bad because, you see, she's a HOT nerd unlike all those ugly nerds in the scribes quadrant. So of COURSE she will immediately top her class in Dauntless - I mean the riders quadrant.
I'm usually lenient with books that aren't 100% original in their setup but this was blatantly pulling from the dregs of Divergence, The Hunger Games, Twilight, Harry Potter, and really really scraping the barrel with them all.

There's barely any worldbuilding and any we are given is poorly done exposition dumps ("Spouts facts when she's scared?" tell me you've never interacted with an actual academic ever my GOD) and that's not even scraping the surface of how little of the worldbuilding makes any sense. The school is inefficient, the military strategy is wasteful and utterly poor in terms of man-management, resource-management and dealing with prisoners. It's no wonder you're not winning that eternal war!

Hoped and prayed for the dragons to improve things. Then it turns out super special ultra girl Violet gets TWO DRAGONS geeee whizz and I just couldn't tolerate this any further. Not even in a "so bad it's good way" either. I couldn't even hold out to see how the smut panned out. That's how much of a turnoff this book was for me.

Deaths were either meaningless or mildly ablist in nature. Also terrible disability rep all around tbh.

DNF page 200.
