There's some interesting social criticism mixed in with all the nonsensical, absurdist confusion that makes up the most of this book, but there's also a truly uncomfortable amount of sexism and weird voyeuristic, rape-culture attitudes which we apparently cannot escape even in a world where eels come out of the sink to steal toothpaste and mice eat soap lollipops.

«No» disse Colin «non è colpa loro. Tutto dipende dal fatto che gli anno detto: 'Il lavoro è sacro, è bello, è buono, è la cosa più importante, e solo chi lavora ha tutti i diritti'. Però poi si fa il possibile per farli lavorare continuamente, così che loro non hanno il tempo di far valere i propri diritti».
«Allora vuoi dire che sono scemi?» disse Chloé.
«Sì, sono scemi» disse Colin. «È per questo che sono d'accordo con quelli che gli raccontano che lavorare è il massimo. Questo li libera dal problema di pensare di cercare di migliorare e di non lavorare più».

Per farla breve, la storia narra di Colin, un ragazzotto benestante di Parigi, innamorato di Chloé che, molto presto, si ammala di uno strano male.
Tutte le vicende appaiono stravaganti, surreali, iconiche, fantasiose. Colin è accompagnato da "comparse" in un viaggio di continua ricerca di se stesso fintanto che non s'imbatte nell'amore. Accecato da questo nuovo sentimento la sua vita è volta a sollazzarsi con Chloé fintanto che non dovrà affrontare il male di lei e sarà costretto a ricredere in tutto ciò che prima aveva evitato, come il lavoro. Nel mentre, tutto intorno a lui sembra perdere colore, sporcarsi, rimpicciolire e farsi, infine, sempre più nero.

Un romanzo che non lascia via di scampo a dispetto dall'inizio stralunato.
Si parla con i topi, gli alcolici vengono preparati con un pianoforte-bar, in chiesa muoiono persone ma il matrimonio si fa lo stesso, si fabbricano fucili con sangue umano, si cura il male con i fiori. Tutto appare come un'allegoria. L'amore, sopra ogni cosa, ci mostra la forza e la debolezza dell'essere umano, inebriato da gioie, feste e colori, spento da mali, tragedie e cattivi consigli.
Non si è, in ambo i casi, in grado di riconoscere la realtà e si finisce col perdere la ragione.

È un romanzo no-sense, inventato, che proietta su carta la realtà con riferimenti alla società contemporanea.

So there is a thing, if i could i would give it 3.5 cuz it wasn’t that bad but i had hope until last page i could give it a solid 4. So to elaborate my rating, i think at the start things were escalating too quickly and i did not really connect woth any of the characters to be honest, but towards the end it made an impression that the author just needed more chapters so he added some. Also, towards the end i found the plot of side characters more interesting and intense then the plot of actual main characters. For example; the death of Chick was described way more that death of the Chloe which is weird because she and Colin are supposedly the main characters. Her death was not described at all it was like this big moment did not happen.
I believe the book would’ve been better if there was bigger spotlight on the Chloe and Colin and the author and story would take time to connect me with them so i could feel the sympathy
but i also am weirded out that my version is like 100 pages shorter maybe cuz is in Slovenian language idk

J'ai pas détesté mais j'ai pas vraiment aimé... On me l'avait tellement vanté que j'en attendais sans doute trop. C'était sympa et je vois la poésie mais j'y ai pas été très sensible.
