53/189 pages. Dropped because it was just too bleak for what I was looking for. Really nice prose though.

Sentence by sentence and paragraph by paragraph, this cooks because GROFF.

But there's not enough story here. It's a "running from" rather than a "running to" novel, and that lack of destination or purpose beyond animal survival limits this novel. She runs. She hides. She builds fires. She fishes. She shits hot liquid streams. But the daily struggle to survive is forged on an a simple refusal to die rather than a desperate need to live as she has so little to look forward to.

She is a survivor, and there's something heroic about that. But by novel's end, despite relentless forward progress and a great deal of literal running, I'm not sure how far we've come.

I wasn’t sure about The Vaster Wilds as I started reading, but I quickly fell into the rhythm and immersion of the densely poetic language. It was beautiful, heart-wrenching and extremely thought-provoking.

I went in with too high of expectations and a lack of awareness that this isn’t usually a type of story that I like. It was a 2.5 for me. If a historical fiction, survival genre is your jam, then this is probably 4/5 stars. It was well written for what it is and felt like an old classic. But alas, I had to trudge forward and force myself to finish.
