Gorgeous writing style and interesting blurb, but the story feel flat for me. I still really liked it, especially since Kiely has such a way with words, but I feel like the plot could have been much more interesting...you know, could have had more twists and turns to make this feel like a genuine road trip. For me, it didn't have as much adventure and heart as I was hoping. Still, the poetic way in which the author describes everything, THAT'S the thing that truly drew me in.

This is a solid road trip novel but it didn't get the job done for me. I was reading it for a middle school audience, and I found even the swearing and drug references and semi on-page sex were too over the top for even the most mature of middle school readers.

I really wanted to like this because Kiely was so stellar in All American Boys.

If you have a teenage girl who moons over a good love story then hand them this book and walk away! I didn't feel it was one of those books with a lot of crossover appeal. Leave it for the teens and they will LOVE it!

Really good! A few parts made me anxious for the characters but in a good way. Heartwarming and enjoyable!

There is so much to LOVE about Brendan Kiely's THE LAST TRUE LOVE STORY I'm not sure where to begin. It's a modern retelling of THE ODYSSEY but with a feminist spin. It is a story that deals with many different kinds of love: first love, love that lasts through the ages, sensual love, love that hurts, love of family, and love of the journey.

Love is a language that is spoken in so many different ways. Kiely's book is a love poem to forever love, first love, family love, questioning love, love of music, love of words, and the struggle of love. Beautiful and touching and will fill your heart.

Read for free on RivetedLit.com, May 2019. I don't like that they chose the road trip theme instead of AAPI or Autism. I wasn't going to read any of them, but with Kiely being a co-author of All American boys, Corrina being a WOC with white adoptive parents, and grandpa's Alzheimer's, I decided to give it a shot.

I'm glad I did. I wouldn't buy it but as a free borrow/lend, I'd recommend it.

My mom has a brain injury with memory and processing problems. Hendrix's relationship with his grandpa (I'm sorry I cannot use Gpa) was touching, and relatable. He handles himself most of the time, but caregivers know the struggle well. I hope people are kinder and more understanding with this illustration.

I also loved him for his distant complicated relationship with his mother, poetry nerdiness, and love of the way too cool rocker chick. I had all three as a freshman.

Corrina is a badass. Edgy, but understandably so with her love of lady rockers (so many ya'll should listen to!), the cultural disconnect, and the clinically distant shrink parental units.

The ending was really sweet and surprising. I was honestly not expecting that. I appreciate the care given to balance family and dreams and True Love.

This felt like a bad copy of John Green's style and aesthetic. I couldn't bring myself to finish it. Every time I picked it up, I had to plow through every page - painfully and slowly. Don't get me wrong, it's not exceptionally awful, but it's below average. Maybe I would've liked it two or three years ago...in any case, I don't think I'd recommend it.
