I would probably give this about 3 1/2 stars. It wasn't bad, but it felt really young, for lack of a better word. Almost like it was written by a child, and the things a child would think was cool. Or what an adult imagined a child would think is cool.
The story was good enough to keep me reading, though, and I will most likely read the next book in the series when it comes out, so there you have it. Not great, but not bad either.

Ugh. I get it... a book with a male POV for reluctant readers. But man, the writing is so basic and simple, the plot banal and cliché, which is a huge letdown given the rather promising premise.
Not among my favorites, unfortunately.

- great introduction, you can definitely tell this was a YA book written for boys in the early 2010s with terms like “man hug” but it was a fun action adventure story that was easy to read and enjoyable throughout. the character development of jack and wade throughout was a majorly enjoyable part as well, for me.
Loved it! Very similar to Percy Jackson and X-Men.
Simply amazing. Especially the end. That was most definitely my favorite part, more specifically page 323. XD
I really enjoyed this fast-paced (kind of thriller) read! A student gave a book talk on it, and now two others (and I) have read it. It's also on the Rebecca Caudill list this year. Michael Vey is one of those kids that gets picked on just for being himself. He has Tourette's Syndrome and only one great friend - Ostin. Suddenly things turn for the worst when he gets sick and tired of being bullied and "zaps" the three bullies with his powers that he's not supposed to use. At that point, of course, a popular cheerleader (Taylor) witnesses the entire thing...
Good YA science fiction. Like the characters. Interesting premise. Just fantastical enough to be a real escape.
