this book is truly a fever dream.
it only took me about 2 hours to read this; this book grabs you by the maw and refuses to let go. i felt consumed by the prose and the plot, like, this book was truly insane.
i really liked how you could either interpret this as either completely truthful or completely fictional. both intepretations can be explained and demonstrated in the story. this is definitely a book that you can reread, and you feel like you must. going into this with either perspective is extremly interesting.
i'm trying to summon parts I didn't like, anything, but there really wasn't anything. it wasn't slow or wordy, or unartistic or patronizing. everything felt important and weighty, and you never wanted to put it down.
carla is absolutely a demon. i wish i didnt view her so negatively but i do. she is sympathetic based on her loneliness but that doesn't stop me from despising her willful ignorance.
david is such a compelling character, i loved how the narrative flipped itself as we became acquainted with him.
amanda felt... partially flat (wow, i succesfully summoned a complaint!) but i think that happens with every main character who has to recall their life. her main goal was to protect nina and that makes sense.
im not sure i have anything else to say. i wish i wrote this review the moment i finished this book.
9.5/10

A story about obsession and guilt. Caring for a child becomes an unhealthy obsession for a mother who listens to the remorseful account of another mother who failed to respect the rescue distance essential to this story.
In this fast-paced short novel Schweblin leads us with minimal guidance, without many (though relevant) directions toward that uncertain destiny as we navigate passages of horror, fantasy, and dreamlike wonder. I'm eager to read the rest of Samanta Schweblin's work.
