adventurous dark emotional mysterious fast-paced

My mother was sure that sooner or later something bad would happen, and now I can see it with total clarity, I can feel it coming toward us like a tangible fate, irreversible“

I read this book in one sitting because it almost felt like I didn’t have a choice, but I was rewarded with a feverish experience of plot and character piecing itself together. Beautiful questions of community and family and collective grief.

***SPOILERS***

My thoughts on this novel are everywhere. I like it, and I don't like it. The Spanish teacher at my school recommended this author.

What I Liked:
*The protagonist in this novel is confused, and as I listened to her talk, I felt exactly as muddled as she was.
*I'm trying to read more international authors, and this author is completely new to me.
*The book is a fun, creepy, quick read.
*This book would be a great one to use with readers' theater in class.

What I Didn't Like-- again, SPOILERS:
*In the first few pages, I struggled to figure out who was talking.
*When the book ended, I was so confused.
-Why is David talking to Amanda? He seems to want her to know "the important thing," but why is he going through all this trouble if he knows she's going to die in a few minutes? He seems to have gone over this story with her several times, so he's making a strong effort. Through the entire book, he seems indifferent to people, so why does he care now?
-Is all of this a fever dream, and none of it happened?
-Is this an environmental thriller? Is someone poisoning the river/ water? If so, who? The book seems set in modern times, so does no one realize what's happening? If that many children have been affected, wouldn't someone investigate?
-Did Omar poison Amanda's husband in the end? Did Carla intentionally poison Amanda and Nina?
-Did Nina's soul go into David's body at the end of the story? If so, how is there a David on the foot of Amanda's bed AND in the back of Amanda's husband's car?
-Where is Carla at the end of the novel?
