i’ve never been sadder that i haven’t liked a book. jacqueline wilson raised me; i truly wouldn’t be the reader or person i am without her books.

this one just fell really flat. all of the plot points felt like they had just been thrown in for the hell of it (the reveal of the ‘secret admirer’ felt so lacking?? like suddenly everything was all good again afterwards despite it being super weird lmao). none of the characters really stood out to me which sucks cause i love “girls in love”, i was sure that magda and nadine would’ve reacted better (with less enthusiasm) to g*ry showing up at the bar because why on earth is this random as old man showing up at a girls night that was crazy

i’m so sad but this book just didn’t resonate with me ☹️

Gary actually had me foaming at the mouth and I spent most of the book yelling
‘YOU LIKE WOMEN’
at Ellie. Wish I’d liked this more if I’m honest. Really hated some of the language in it. I haven’t heard a character talk about their body in that way in a book in a while and it really threw me off in the first few pages. Pretty easy read though but bloody hell Gary was a waste of pages and the whole idea of Ellie dating her secondary school art teacher as an adult was so icky 😭

I wanted to love this one so so badly. But it just fell kind of flat for me. I was so excited to be reintroduced to characters that raised me but two of them are barely in it and arguably some of the more interesting relationships/dynamics weren’t explored.

Ellie’s head wasn’t a super fun place to be and I found her not particularly likeable but I think it was due to lack of depth? Although I do fear my enjoyment may have been impacted simply by a change in reading taste over the years. I don’t know if the authors writing style lends itself to adult fiction particularly well and I found the narrative voice quite jarring because of this.

The book tells an important story though in terms of Ellie’s self discovery even at a later age. I just think it could’ve been done with depth we’ve seen from the author previously.

The book is fun, but it’s not the book I waited 12 years for…

I loved the nostalgia that came with reading this book. I heavily read JW when I was younger and it was my first introduction to more emotional stories about people rather than fantasy or worlds where everyone is happy. I would love to see JW revisit more of her stories in versions for adults! I also loved the little Easter eggs about her other books in the story!
