Like many people I wanted to read this book because Jacqueline Wilson was a huge influence on my and I absolutely devoured her books as a child and teenager. Looking few other reviews of this book a lot of people mentioned the nostalgia, and I relished in that as well.
The main issues in the book are all that Wilson's writing reads the same as when I was twelve (only with more swearing and graphically described sex scenes). I related to Ellie as a teenager. I don't really relate to her as an adult. The writing is very flat and a bit tell, don't show. Also someone pointed out that characters keep 'ringing' for an Uber and I noticed it every single time.
This book was very easy to read, but it really picked up when her father got ill. Those scenes made me very emotional. Perhaps the simplicity of the language and the storytelling really brought home that horribly relatable situation.
The ending was very rom com, but I enjoyed it. I wanted it to happen and luxuriated in the sappy romance of it. I know that Wilson now is with a woman, so I do wonder how much of Ellie's middle aged sexual awakening is based on her own experiences.
At the end of it I am so very happy that Ellie Allard got a hot girlfriend.
