This book should come with a trigger warning. I've never thought trigger warnings needed to be a thing. But now I get it. So without any spoilers, trigger warning, primarily for sensitive widow/ers.

This was my book clubs pick for the month and while I normally wouldn’t pick this up, I was intrigued by the summary. However I was very underwhelmed. Early on you figure out how this book is going to end. And you’re left with a lot of lack luster buildup to that conclusion.
The Irish expressions and dialect left me extremely frustrated and confused. Add that to the over descriptive parts of the story that tended to hold no weight to the plot and I was annoyed. Some major aspects were brushed off and rushed through what I wish the author had spent more time on.
Overall, the story as a whole is interesting. But the delivery ruined it for me.

I loved this book. 💕💕💕
It’s my all time favorite audio book. I loved the way Maurice said Fecker 😂 I laughed and cried so much. I can’t wait until Anne Griffin writes another book!

The main character/narrator is an eijit! (I might not have the spelling correct for this Irish epithet, but the gist is clear.) This is a cautionary tale to the reader to cultivate a large circle of close friends and to be generous and empathetic to all in our youth; otherwise, WHEN ALL IS SAID and done, we are going to be consumed by regret and loneliness in our old age and will probably make some very selfish rash decisions with negative consequences. Permanent stain.
I wanted to like this book. I wanted to like Maurice. It is clear from the outset how this story will finish. With that finish in mind, I was looking for evidence why I should be sad and feel for him. The best part about Maurice was Sadie. He loved her, but didn’t understand her. He also didn’t seem to want to try. He was patient with her sister Noreen. However, he is otherwise miserly and inattentive to his family. His first and lasting love is money and the farms that were profitable to him. He had no patience for anyone. He had no friends, nor did he want any. He held onto his grudges so tight that he didn’t know how to let them go.
So this is a case where I like how the author has written the story and the protagonist, but I didn’t like the character which made it hard for me to care about the story. I just thought he was a miserable person for no real reason other than he wanted to be and he made a lot of his life that he never learned to appreciate.

I highly recommend listening to this as an audio book. The book group I read this with had differing opinions. Those of us who listened had a great experience.

Lovely. Simply Lovely. However, this is a book set in Ireland so there is a whole lot of sorrow. But a story very well told. I also love books that read well in one or two sittings.
