I should probably wait to write this review until after my tears have stopped streaming, but I'm not going to wait because this book is a stunningly told tale and has moved me more than any book I've read in the several months.
This book! I could not have loved it more. I laughed, I was incensed. I had great affection. I was heartbroken. Ultimately, I wanted to be friends with Maurice and Sadie. Wonderful book.
It's probably a bit unfair, but this just seemed stilted and a little melodramatic after the wonderful two books of John Boyne I've read lately. Couldn't really stomach another Irish writer who was so inferior by comparison. I got to the end of the first toast. In another context, I might have liked this, but it's not for now.

It's sad, beautiful and touching. A deep reflection about what life can mean and what we can get from it or make of it.

Sad, sweet, convoluted. An Irish Man Called Ove without the happy ending.
A charming novel of a man reflecting on his life and the people who have shaped him. Maurice Hannigan sits at a hotel bar and toasts 5 of the people in his life who have most influenced him. Written in the Irish vernacular, it is funny, sad and realistic. Maurice reviews his life from childhood to old age and along the way reveals secrets , misunderstandings and choices made and the consequences they had. Maurice is an everyman that readers will relate to. - Jennifer C.
I had a hard time working through this one and stalled at the end. I’m unlikely to recommend it hence the low rating.
Pull up a chair by the bar, charge your glass & settle in for the night because in this novel, expertly written by Anne Griffin, 84-year-old Maurice Hannigan has a rollicking good tale to tell!
